Salem used a pair of hits from Koby Clemens to sink Lynchburg Sunday afternoon 3-0 at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Clemens hit his first Advanced-A home run to propel the Avalanche (9-7) over the Hillcats (6-10).
The Avalanche opened the scoring in the fourth when, with two out, Clemens blasted a 1-1 pitch over the left-field wall against Lynchburg’s Tony Watson. Hillcat Manager Jeff Branson protested the play, saying the ball was in foul territory. But plate umpire Matt Abbott ruled the ball fair and Branson was eventually ejected.
Salem scored its next run in the seventh when Jhon Florentino doubled and moved to third on a bunt from Sal Iacono. With the infield pulled in, Ryan Reed hit a grounder to Hillcats’ shortstop Greg Picart, who fielded the ball cleanly, but made an errant throw to home, allowing Florentino to score.
The final run came in the eighth when Clemens, with Jordan Parraz on first, blooped a ball into shallow right that no Lynchburg fielder was able to make a play on the ball and Parraz scored from first.
The Hillcats hit the road for Myrtle Beach following Sunday’s game and will face the Pelicans tonight at 7 p.m.
