Gretna’s Ceseley Haynes was named Group A player of the year and the Hawks’ Ketina Brooks was the state coach of the year, according to a vote of the state’s coaches.
Haynes, a senior centerfielder, and Brooks helped lead the Hawks to a 20-3 record and a Group A state championship.
Haynes, a first-team all-Dogwood District selection and the Region B player of the year, batted .511 with 26 runs scored and 17 RBIs. She was a first-team all-area pick by The News & Advance.
She was one of two Gretna first-team selections, along with pitcher Teresa Dalton. Dalton, The News & Advance’s all-area softball player of the year, went 20-3 with a 0.68 ERA and 192 strike outs.
James River’s Abbie Rexrode, a Virginia Tech commit, was named state pitcher of the year.
Gretna catcher Cheryl Crews and Altavista pitcher Brooke Short were honorable mention picks.
