Hokies look for answers after costly loss

The scene looked and sounded so familiar: Virginia Tech’s offensive players talking in hushed tones after a game, in the bowels of some stadium, about how their shortcomings marred a stingy performance by the Hokies’ defense.
It has become a recurring nightmare for Tech, one that could derail a season that seemed to have turned upward for the young Hokies. They squeezed just 250 yards out of Thursday night’s 16-14 loss at Miami. The Hurricanes and North Carolina now must lose in order for Tech to find a way to its second consecutive ACC championship game.

Still-hopeful Flames look to ground Bulldogs’ air attack

Had Gardner-Webb held serve at home last Saturday against Coastal Carolina, tonight’s matchup with No. 24 Liberty would have held so much more meaning for both teams. As it happened, though, the Chanticleers knocked off the Bulldogs in Boiling Springs, N.C., clinching the Big South Conference championship for the Flames.
That doesn’t diminish today’s game for Liberty, which is still holding out slim hopes of earning its first FCS playoff berth. But how much does Gardner-Webb have to play for?

Late foul costly for LU women in opener

Amber Mays was working on instinct, and when VCU’s Radoslava Bachrarova stopped and prepared to shoot, Mays defended.
Too well, it seems. The Liberty guard nicked Bachrarova’s arm as the VCU guard attempted a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left. Bachrarova sank all three free throws, and the Rams escaped with a 59-57 victory Friday night in the first round of the Preseason Women’s NIT.

Curry hot in Flames’ blowout

It took Seth Curry all of 14 seconds to endear himself to Liberty’s fan base Friday night. That’s when he pulled up and hit his first jumper. Thirty-eight seconds later, Curry drilled a 3-pointer. At that second, it was clear that all of the hype surrounding his arrival at Liberty was justified.

MIAMI — Virginia Tech’s unpredictable offense was at it again Thursday night in Miami. A week after romping for 400 yards, the Hokies took a step back in a 16-14 loss to the Hurricanes at Dolphin Stadium.

Flames notebook

Gardner-Webb’s seventh opponent — Presbyterian — was the first to rush for 100 yards as a team against the Bulldogs this season. Since then, GWU’s run defense has taken a bit of a hit, at least in terms of raw statistics.
VMI ran for 321 yards against Gardner-Webb, but that’s to be expected considering the Keydets are second in FCS in run offense. A week later, Stony Brook rolled up 316 yards against the Bulldogs.

UVa linebacker likely to miss rest of season

The five true freshmen whom Al Groh has used this season are likely to assume prominent roles on the University of Virginia football team in years to come.
For one, however, his first season may be over.
Groh said Sunday that outside linebacker Cameron Johnson, who has missed the past two games with an ankle injury, probably won’t play again during the regular season.

Farrakhan impressive in exhibition

Shooting guard Jeff Jones started 25 games as a freshman in 2007-08 and ended the season by scoring 26 points against Bradley in the College Basketball Invitational semifinals.
Yet when the University of Virginia basketball team’s starting five took the floor Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena, Jones was on the bench. Classmate Mustapha Farrakhan started at shooting guard against Division II Shepherd University, and the 6-4 left-hander justified UVa coach Dave Leitao’s faith in him.

Flames notes

Corey Rasberry’s career touchdown haul entering Liberty’s game at VMI could be counted on one hand.
One fist actually.
“He never scored in high school, he never scored in Pop Warner, he never scored in college football,” said Flames tailback Rashad Jennings, Rasberry’s roommate.
Until Saturday, at least. The tight end caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Brock Smith in the first quarter of Liberty’s 38-26 victory, catching a throw on a play-action rollout before sprinting down the left sideline for the score

UVa notes

Yannick Reyering, a former all-ACC soccer player, is out as Virginia’s kicker, at least for the moment. Saturday against Wake Forest, true freshman Robert Randolph took over for Reyering, who missed two field goals Nov. 1 in UVa’s overtime loss to Miami (Fla.) at Scott Stadium.

LU defeats VMI with Jennings rumbling through the Keydets’ defense

LEXINGTON — Liberty’s defense was predictably gassed. VMI had spent much of the first half and the early part of the third quarter Saturday at Foster Stadium running all over the Flames. A pitch here for a big gain. A burst up the middle there for a first down. The Keydets had cut an 18-point deficit to two, and the Flames knew they needed to do one thing: Get the big boy the football.

LU’s not ready to call it a season

Though a berth in the 16-team FCS playoff field is now a serious longshot for Liberty’s football team, the season isn’t over. Far from it. The Flames still have a number of goals within reach in the season’s final three weeks, starting with today’s game at VMI.

Hokies’ Evans: ‘I belong out here’

BLACKSBURG — The same Virginia Tech offense that struggled to gain one yard three games ago against Boston College was seemingly unstoppable Thursday night against No. 23 Maryland.
