Daryl Robertson just wants to play football, which is why the former Liberty High School standout has left Virginia Tech to play at Liberty University.
Robertson, the News & Advance All-Area defensive player of the year in 2005, said Monday that he will transfer to LU. He will have three years of eligibility remaining and will be able to play immediately.
Robertson is expected to enroll in classes for the upcoming summer session at LU.
Robertson redshirted his freshman year at Tech and spent all of last season on the Hokies’ scout team. He never appeared in a game and was fourth on Tech’s depth chart at nose tackle.
The 6-foot-2, 297-pound Robertson said he decided at the end of last football season to look at switching schools. He said the decision to move east on U.S. 460 to play FCS football at Liberty was strictly based on gaining playing time.
Robertson visited Liberty’s football offices Monday and came away impressed.
“I just felt that it would put me in a great situation,” Robertson said. “I felt comfortable with the coaching staff, like they treated me like I was part of a family.”
Robertson has never played in a 3-4 defense, the scheme the Flames employ. He’ll likely play defensive end at Liberty.
Robertson, who will major in communications, said he talked to some of his former Liberty High teammates, including Flames linebacker Ian Childress and former LU tight end Chris Luck before making his decision.
“There’s just a good feeling around the football offices about next year,” Robertson said. “That’s the type of environment I want to be a part of.”

Yep, LU is an excellent fall back college for a fall back athlete.
