Owenby impresses area players
NEWPORT NEWS – Jefferson Forest boys soccer players Tim Bullock and Scott Zaring got an up-close-and-personal look at Virginia High School Coaches Association player of the year, Brian Ownby of Group AAA state champion Deep Run, who will play next year at Virginia, in Wednesday night’s VHSCA All-Star game.

Lynchburg edges Big Island
FOREST — In an American Legion Baseball game slowed by walks and plagued by errors, Lynchburg Post 16 picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and survived a three-run rally in the top of the ninth to hold off Big Island Post 217 on Wednesday night, 10-9.

Davenport takes title
FOREST — Eric Davenport’s golf resume isn’t terribly extensive. He played at Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton and tried to walk on at Virginia Tech, where he missed making the team by a single stroke.

Colonial Hills wreaks havoc
FOREST — Chris Boswell parked his cart near the 17th green at Colonial Hills Saturday during the second round of the Central Virginia Invitational Golf Tournament, obviously disgusted with what had transpired in the previous four hours.

Tennis tournaments such as this weekend’s 48th annual Central Virginia Invitational (CVITT) at Oakwood Country Club are basically battles of the fittest.

Big Island opens the season with a victory
FOREST — Big Island Post 217 racked up five doubles in Friday night’s season-opening 5-2 victory over Danville Post 325 at Forest Middle School, including three in the first inning when it scored its first run.

Northside upsets Forest in Region III soccer
VINTON — Facing Blue Ridge District regular-season champion Northside, a team it beat 6-0 in the 2006 Region III semifinals and 3-0 in a preseason scrimmage, Jefferson Forest’s boys soccer team was the prohibitive favorite in Thursday’s Region III rematch.

FOREST — Jefferson Forest junior Cameron DeWitt showed in Tuesday’s Region III girls soccer quarterfinal against Robert E. Lee that she can finish an assist and dish one out.
Jefferson Forest wins in the ninth to advance
FOREST — Jefferson Forest certainly made things a lot harder on itself than it needed to Tuesday in the Region III playoffs.
The Cavaliers committed eight errors that led to four unearned runs, but JF managed to pull out a dramatic 9-8 victory over visiting Northside in the bottom of the ninth to advance to Thursday’s Region III quarterfinals.
