County man cleared of sex abuse charges

An Appomattox County man accused of sexually abusing a young girl was cleared of all charges Tuesday morning in Lynchburg Circuit Court.

Arthur Lee Dews, 52, was charged in February with two counts of aggravated sexual battery of a child under 13. On Tuesday, however, Lynchburg Public Defender Sharon Eimer presented evidence that the alleged victim had been hospitalized for mental health problems six times in the five months leading up to the allegations.

Price-gouge investigation continues in Lynchburg area

State investigators are still looking into accusations that gas stations broke the law in September by raising their prices suddenly two months ago.

That’s when oil refineries in the Gulf Coast shut down to prepare for landfall of Hurricane Ike.

Raiders hit road for Region B game in Berryville

One hundred and seventy-five miles separate Appomattox from Berryville, but somehow, the Raiders’ football team is classified in the same region of the state as Clarke County’s.

That will give the Eagles, champions of the Bull Run District, a decisive home-field advantage when they host Appomattox, which finished third in the Dogwood District, in tonight’s Division II, Region B semifinal.

Retired educator Michael Kelly joins Appomattox County High School as principal

The leader at the helm of Appomattox County High School has changed again.

Former Bedford County principal Michael Kelly started as the school’s principal Wednesday. Kelly replaces assistant principal David Read, who was named acting principal last month after the sudden reassignment of principal Greg Wheeler. Read is currently serving as an assistant principal at the school.
