GRETNA — Gretna didn’t become a perennial Group A power by playing ordinary football.

And there was nothing ordinary about Chris Thurman’s second-quarter play call. With the Hawks locked in a tie with Clarke County in the Region B, Division 2 championship game Friday night, the Hawks faced 4th-and-7 from their own 38.

Thurman didn’t even think about sending out the punt team. Never made a motion. Instead, he told quarterback Jayme Barksdale to run.

That he did, picking up 30 yards on the fourth-down play, awakening the Hawks’ offense. Gretna would later score on the drive to take the lead for good, and the Hawks spent the rest of the game running at will against the Eagles in a 51-27 victory.

GRETNA — With an offense that averages more than 40 points a game, Gretna High’s football team usually doesn’t need to rely on its defense.

But that doesn’t mean the Hawks have suffered any dropoff on that side of the ball.

Gretna has four shutouts to its credit in 2008, including two in a row. The Hawks closed out the regular season with a 35-0 romp over Altavista and opened the Group A Region B Division 2 playoffs last week by whitewashing Goochland 36-0. They have also blanked Magna Vista (41-0) and Chatham (69-0).

Clarke County proved it could overcome adversity in Friday night’s Region B, Division II football playoff game against Appomattox.
The Eagles overcame three turnovers and a momentum swinging score by the Raiders that cut Clarke County’s lead to 20-19 at the half, but Clarke senior Tyler Morley sealed it by intercepting Kenny Scott’s pass in the end zone with 55 seconds left to help Clarke hold off Appomattox 27-19 at Wilbur M. Feltner Stadium.
“I knew we had to step up and it was a close game,” Morley said. “I knew I had to just do it and pick up the team. ... I read (Thomas’) eyes and I knew when it was coming so I turned around and just jumped up and got it.”

The Brookville Bees wasted no time shaking off any rust that might have threatened to tarnish their perfect season after a two-week layoff.
The Bees took their opening possession 74 yards against the visiting Northside Vikings before stalling out on the five-yard line and settling for a short field goal and an early 3-0 lead. Although the offense produced another 35 points, those three were all the Bees would need on a night where their defense took center stage, allowing just 85 yards in the 38-0 win.

BEDFORD — There’s no way Jefferson Forest running back Desmond Goode should not have been taken down on each of his two second-half touchdown runs in Friday night’s regular-season finale at Seminole District and Bedford County rival Liberty.

But Goode, who finished with 184 yards rushing on 18 carries, eluded the initial tackles in traffic then emerged from a pack of Minutemen and accelerated up the sideline for 64- and 52-yard scores that sealed the Cavaliers’ 30-14 victory.

Thanks to the expanded Division 3 and 4 football playoff format, which qualifies six teams rather than four, Bedford County rivals Liberty and Jefferson Forest both have clinched Region III berths for the first time in the same season in recent history going into tonight’s Seminole District finale in Bedford.

But both teams, which sport identical 6-3 records (3-2 in district play) have plenty to play for — namely securing their No. 3 seeds and taking home-field advantage and momentum into the first round of the playoffs.

RUSTBURG — Before Friday night’s game against Rustburg, Liberty coach Chris Watts was reluctant to unleash junior backup fullback Brandon Sparrow in the rushing attack.

The bruising 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive tackle was too valuable to the Minutemen on defense, as he showed in assaulting the Red Devils’ option game in the first half.

Sparrow got his opportunity to showcase his offensive potential after halftime and made the most of it, carrying 10 times for 141 yards and three touchdowns in Liberty’s 41-26 Seminole District victory.

Somewhere in the back of E.C. Glass’ collective mind must have been the memory of last year’s home game against Patrick Henry, where a one-win Patriots team crushed the Hilltoppers, 34-9.

That was a home loss for E.C. Glass and one of only two wins for Patrick Henry. On Friday night, the Patriots had another chance to pull the upset at City Stadium. This time, though, the Hilltoppers managed to hold a strong Patriots’ ground game in check and came away with a 30-22 victory, evening their record at 4-4.

APPOMATTOX — In an otherwise defensive battle, Appomattox made the most of two long runs to slip past Altavista 13-7 in a Dogwood District battle on Friday. Appomattox quarterback Kenny Scott broke loose around the right end for a 61-yard run on the Raiders’ first possession, carrying the ball down to the Colonels’ 7 before scrambling in for the score off of a naked bootleg three plays later. Joe Reed set up a second Appomattox score with another 61-yard run, down to Altavista’s 6, before sweeping into the end zone from 9 yards for a 13-0 lead.

As usual, Liberty Christian Academy’s trio of offensive stars—tailback Desmond Rice, quarterback Mike Rocco and wide receiver Patrick Kelly—shined Friday night at Williams Stadium against Hargrave Military Academy. However, it was a stifling defense that allowed just 103 yards that paved the way for the Bulldogs’ 47-7 Virginia Independent Conference victory.
