RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s apple harvest is shaping up to be a good one.
According to the Virginia Farm Bureau, the harvest is under way and three-fourths of growers report a good crop. The harvest is running slower than last year’s pace.
Nationally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has predicted an apple crop that is up 1 percent this year compared to that of 2007. But the nation’s top three apple-producing states — New York, Michigan and Washington — are seeing apple production drop.
That could be good for Virginia growers seeking to market their apples globally.
American farmers have seen export demand rise for all fruit.
Virginia’s apple harvest runs through December.
