FINCASTLE, Va. (AP) — A Vinton man will spend eight years in prison for sexually assaulting an Appalachian Trail hiker.
Joel Fulton Carter the Third pleaded no contest Tuesday in Botetourt County Circuit Court to a charge of object sexual penetration. In exchange for the plea, 22 years of a 30-year sentence were suspended.
Authorities said a young woman who was hiking alone on the 2,175-mile trail from Georgia to Maine in early May had gotten off near Troutville to pick up supplies at a post office.
Police said a man offered her a ride as she walked along U.S. 11, then took her to an office building where he assaulted her.
Authorities declined to give the woman’s age or hometown.
