RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Supporters of nonprofit organizations in Virginia hope a new study on the groups’ economic impact will boost their sector and give them a larger voice in policy decisions.
The study released Friday said nonprofit organizations employed 211,000 workers in 2005, or about 1 in 17 workers in Virginia. Nonprofit employees’ wages totaled more than $8.2 billion that year.
Nonprofits’ assets totaled $66.7 billion.
The $50,000 study was conducted by Lester Salamon, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies. It was funded by The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia, Connect Network and other groups.
Connect Network director Nancy Stutts says the nonprofit sector will use the study as a benchmark and to educate the public about nonprofits and their various missions.
