RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Forest fires have charred more acreage in Virginia this year than in any year since 1963.
More than 1,100 forest fires have burned 25,153 acres so far this year compared to 1,033 fires that burned 8,379 acres at this time last year.
A recent report from the state’s secretary of agriculture and forestry says 1963 was the last year so many acres burned in a single year.
Fall wildfire season is Oct. 15 through Nov. 30.
