ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — The U.S. Marshals Service says 626 fugitives wanted on more than 900 charges in the Western District of Virginia have been arrested in a weeklong roundup.
The sweep led by the Marshals Service was part of a nationwide initiative called Operation FALCON that targeted sex offenders, violent criminals and gang and drug operations.
Deputy U.S. Marshal William Fallon says 239 local law-enforcement officers were sworn in as special federal deputies, which allowed them to cross jurisdictional lines to make arrests. Several people were arrested out of state.
Officers arrested 136 people on narcotics charges, 21 on sexual offenses, one on a homicide charge and five on kidnapping warrants.
