WASHINGTON (AP) — Virginia Sen. John Warner is joining another lawmaker asking the federal government to conserve fuel as gas prices rise.

The Republican senator joined Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman — from New Mexico — introducing a sense-of-the-Senate resolution Thursday.

The bipartisan resolution urges President Bush to require that all federal departments and agencies take steps to reduce daily consumption of gas and other fuels.

The lawmakers cite gas prices they estimate have risen about a penny a day for the past month.

AAA reported a gallon of self-serve regular gas averaged $3.73 earlier this week in Virginia — some 30 cents higher than last month and 67 cents higher than the same time last year.

That price comes as AAA predicts nearly 824,000 Virginians will travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday.
