Nuclear agency wants BWXT fined for spill

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission wants a $32,500 penalty imposed on BWX Technologies for a chemical spill that injured a worker at its Lynchburg plant.
The NRC said Tuesday it’s seeking the penalty based on a spill that happened on April 28. A worker trying to clean the chemical injured his eyes after being exposed to hydroflouric acid.
The storage container that held a chemical agent to neutralize the acid was mislabeled, the NRC says, which caused the worker to use the wrong chemical.
Thanks to a quick response from a BWX emergency team, the worker didn’t suffer permanent vision loss.
A spokeswoman for the company did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Wednesday.
