WASHINGTON (AP) — Virginia Senator Jim Webb says the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs plans to hold a hearing to consider the federal recognition of six Virginia tribes.

The committee will consider the Thomasina E. Jordan Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act at a September 25 hearing at which Webb plans to speak. The House of Representatives approved the bill last May but the measure is awaiting Senate action.

The tribes have sought recognition since the 1990s. Tribal leaders with the Eastern Chickahominy, Chickahominy, Upper Mattaponi, Rappahannock, Monacan and Nansemond tribes say federal recognition could entitle them to federal aid.

I hope the Monacan tribe is recognized as they are indeed a big part of Central VA history. The money will help them but what about the controversy a few years back? Wasn’t the sticking point for federal recognition Casinos? What’s the status?
