ABINGDON, Va. (AP) — A southwest Virginia man who pretended to be a quadriplegic to receive federal benefits has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in multiple fraud schemes.
Acting U.S. Attorney Julia Dudley announced Monday that 31-year-old Timothy Carl Ling of Hurley had pleaded guilty to a number of fraud and money-laundering charges.
His mother, Carol Irene Estep, was sentenced in March to nearly eight years for the schemes in Virginia and Kentucky. His father, Herman Scott Ling, is on five years’ probation.
Prosecutors said Carl Ling and Estep also defrauded credit card companies out of more than $344,000 for shopping sprees, vacations, gambling and to purchase property. They also failed to report more than $210,000 in profits from a recycling business to the IRS.
