ROANOKE - Forecasters say a funnel cloud was spotted above Roanoke and heavy winds uprooted trees and knocked down power lines.
The National Weather Service says no injuries were reported in the storm.
Meteorologist Robert Stonefield in Blacksburg says a weather service team will be sent out Wednesday to investigate the damage. The team will determine whether the funnel cloud touched down and if the storm can be classified as a tornado.
The weather service says the storm knocked down power lines and trees, including on houses.
Appalachian Power spokesman Phil Moye says the storm knocked out power to 4,000 customers in southwest Virginia on Tuesday night.
