VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP)—Increasing demand for services is forcing some free health clinics in Virginia to tighten their eligibility requirements.
Others are trying to recruit more doctors and health-care providers to reduce wait times.
The culprit: the downturn in the economy.
The percentage of working Virginians who received health insurance through their jobs decreased to 61.9 percent in 2007 from 66.7 percent in 2006, according to The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis.
Susan Hellstrom, executive director of the Beach Health Clinic, says patient visits at her clinic increased 20 percent last month over September 2007.
New patient visits almost doubled at Chesapeake Care, reaching 1,128, according to Cathy Lewis, executive director of Chesapeake Care.
