CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The Thomas Jefferson Foundation has purchased almost 29 acres near Monticello to preserve and expand nearby trails.
The foundation, which operates Monticello, paid $500,000 to the Hartman Family Corporation for the land, which connects the 89-acre Kemper Park to the Secluded Farm along the Thomas Jefferson Parkway. The parkway is a 266-acre private park near the entrance of Jefferson’s estate and is funded by ticket sales and private donations.
Parkway manager Jason Stevens said the foundation wanted to preserve as much of the area near Monticello as possible, and plans for the land include expanding its rustic trail systems.
