John Brownlee, who resigned effective Friday as U.S. attorney for Western Virginia, says he will formally announce his candidacy tomorrow for the Republican nomination for attorney general of Virginia.
Brownlee joins state Sen. Ken Cuccinelli, R-Fairfax, in the GOP contest for the third spot on the party’s ticket in the 2009 statewide elections.
Bob McDonnell, the current attorney general, already has been endorsed for governor by 50 of the state’s top Republican leaders. Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling also received the leadership’s endorsement for another term in his current office.
President Bush appointed Brownlee, 43, to the U.S. attorney position in August 2001.
Brownlee’s prosecutions included corruption cases involving the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, former Lynchburg Mayor Carl Hutcherson and government contracts in Buchanan County. Other cases involved drug trafficking, illegal immigration and capital murder.
Brownlee, a graduate of Washington and Lee University and the College of William and Mary’s law school, previously was an assistant U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C.
