VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Virginia drinkers have something new to try.
State Alcoholic Beverage Control stores have begun carrying absinthe, a liquor banned for 95 years in the United States until May 2007. Virginia approved one brand for sale in the state a year later and Kubler Swiss Absinthe Superieure started showing up on liquor-store shelves last June.
But a taste of the exotic drink doesn’t come cheap. ABC stores are charging $59.95 per bottle.
University of Virginia Health System medical toxicologist Dr. Chris Holstege says drinkers shouldn’t worry about the myth that absinthe causes effects similar to marijuana or opium. Rather, Holstege says people need to know absinthe has a high percentage of alcohol. Kubler, for instance, is 53 percent ethanol.
