RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Rising gas prices aren’t expected to keep Virginians entirely off the road this Memorial Day weekend — though there will be fewer of them.
AAA predicts nearly 824,000 Virginians will travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday. That’s a decrease of more than 3 percent from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
About 694,000 Virginians will be on highways, a 1.3 percent decrease from a year ago.
Martha Meade, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic, blames gas prices and the economy.
AAA reported a gallon of self-serve regular gas averaged $3.73 Wednesday in Virginia. That’s 30 cents higher than last month and 67 cents higher than the same time last year.
AAA says about 84,800 Virginians will fly this holiday weekend, a decrease of 7.5 percent from last year.
