Voters need to wake up, learn about Obama
Wake up, Virginia! After a weekend of one Barack Obama ad after another telling the same distortions and outright lies, I began to wonder how gullible he thinks Virginians are.
In his ad about taxes, he claims John McCain would give big tax breaks to corporations while he would give tax breaks to 95 percent of Americans, those making less than $250,000. First of all, big corporations pass their taxes right along to you and me in the form of higher prices on their goods and services. Secondly, following the Bush tax cuts the top 10 percent of wage earners in this nation already pay more than 65 percent of the taxes according to the Congressional Joint Economic Committee.
What Obama doesn’t tell you is that he will let President Bush’s tax cuts expire, which will be a huge tax increase on everyone. What McCain wants to do is make those tax cuts permanent. Remember, small businesses and corporations provide jobs. Cutting taxes is a jobs stimulus that worked for JFK and worked after Sept. 11. Now is not the time to raise them. Finally, the top 50 percent of wage earners pay 96.5 percent of the taxes, so why is Obama promising the lower 50 percent of wage earners a tax break when they only pay 3.5 percent of the taxes unless it’s a simple bribe for a vote?
Remember, too, that none of Obama’s close friends and associates can stand beside him: Tony Rezko, the Rev. Jim Wright, William Ayers, ACORN and the Daley crowd in Chicago. Do you really feel that the man Louis Farrakhan calls the Messiah is the man you want as commander-in-chief for the next four years? Think about it. Investigate it for yourself. Make an informed decision. There’s so much we do not know, and so little time.
WILLIAM P. SAUNDERS Jr.
Lynchburg
The wrong man
I would love to vote for an African-American president — just not this one. There are things that cause me to be uneasy at the thought of an Obama presidency.
What kind of person expects to be elected after criticizing his own country while in Europe and stating that he wants us “to regain our standing in the world”? I know it is acceptable in the liberal crowd to be totally embarrassed about the U.S., but those of us who are proud of our nation and realize the good our country does will not vote for Obama.
Obama is fond of socialized government and wants universal health care. Unfortunately, countries that have it also have a diminished standard of health care, and people must wait for crucial tests and surgeries. Universal health care removes the incentive for physicians to excel in knowledge and training. A guaranteed job and no control over salary would spell mediocrity for our health care system.
He also wants a massive government program to provide housing for everyone. This sounds humane, but with the current financial crisis caused in large part by this very philosophy, I think we can see where this would take us. Besides, we have programs for housing needs.
Universal child care and preschool are other big government influences Obama likes. Is there nothing he would leave the individual American to do?
Ambitious? Yes. Compassionate? No.

I read the daily opinions early in the morning and try to catch up on all the IMPORTANT(?) comments. It is late now and I find it unfortunate that I always get to these postings so late.
They do however give me the opportunity for a good laugh at the end of the day.
El Queso… don’t get too serious in here. Your comments will get disregarded immediately. Cosmo however took the exception and referenced your post, even if it was only a lead-in to one of his multiple discourses. However, thanks to his reference of ”money grows on trees” I have been reminded of one of my great-aunt’s favorite sayings: “Sh#* In one hand and make a wish in the other, and see which one gets full faster !”
The usual posters, liberal, conservative, nutcases, etc. all are wishing…and we’re all catching all their Sh#*!
I do have faith (oops, I mean belief) that when this mockery of an election is over, BJ, Cosmo, GMa, OM, MarieB, EyenSky and even Luv and Fred, (Sorry Ken, I have given up reading your postings) will all get together, share a Coke and have a huge group hug! Naaahhh!

Cosmo,
You should not have disclosed God’s plan at such an early date.
Now I may as well give the details:
I placed an order with Amazon for long-range catapults. Until Bush took office, all long-range catapults were built in the USA, providing rednecks with good paying jobs that allowed them to make the payments on their doublewide trailers, grow beer guts (and feeble minds), have dog and cockfights and vote Republican. However, thanks to globalization and outsourcing promoted by the Republicans, they are now built in ... France. Hey, why not? The French, after all, invented the damn things (or was it the Romans?). Who cares? But operating instructions will be translated in English, which is not necessarily a blessing as even the American president can hardly speak English.
When the Falwells attack City Council with their storm troopers (in German, SS) we will pelt them with ripe and smelly Camemberts. To cut off their supply lines, we will also bombard LU and TRBC (except the Creation Museum – we don’t want to awake the 3,000 year old dinosaur).
American patriots will flock to the side of the Lynchburg Lafayette (me!). What an epic battle that will be! It has already been chronicled for thousands of years in the reliable history book called the Bible. It will be known for generations to come as Armageddon-on-the-James. Lafayette-of-Lynchburg Day will replace Columbus Day.
French Enlightenment will defeat evangelical obscurantism! Then, for a thousand years, Americans in Lynchburg will eat saucissons, baguettes and drink Mouton Rothschild 1947 (Dom Perignon for me on account of my weakened liver). Wearing berets and angelic wings will be optional, as well as playing harps or trumpets, as this still will be a free country. And then God will send his only Son, Sarkozy (and his wife Carla – she looks great in the nude, check it on the Internet). Or something like this.

Fred, my suggestion to save (literally) Lynchburg from a LU takeover is to eliminate at-large council seats and then give every ward two council members. Wouldn’t that prevent them from having a majority?

(el queso grande)... That is precisely why he is known as “The Lafayette of Lynchburg”.
Before I met Fred I did not believe in reincarnation. Now, I am not so sure.
Mr Obama called me today to give me the “heads up” on what he is going to announce tonight at the debate. After he is elected Americans will no longer use paper money at all. Brazil nuts will be the standard currency. We will have to purchase them (exchange paper money for them) at The Mosque. Louis Farrakhan will be in charge.
Lets see John McCain top that.
Of course, the question… “Do you think money grows on trees?“... will be rendered moot. Which, of course, is the whole point.
Once the common man can understand the monetary system again our economy will return to normal. Catastrophe will thus be avoided.

BREAKING NEWS:
The US ranks 29th worldwide in infant mortality, tying Slovakia and Poland but lagging behind CUBA, the CDC reports. France? 9th.
Let us hear GrandMaw’s and Theodore’s take on that one!

Fred;
While I don’t always agree with you, I respect the fact that you place importance on what is happening at the local level, and Lynchburg (and any other American locale) would be better off if more people did just that. I believe the founding fathers meant for it to be that way. Our federal government has taken so much control because somewhere along the way we gave it to them.

Fred,
The LU kids are nothing compared to the 1.3 million fraudulent voters that the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (community organizers)has infiltrated the country with. Maybe you should concentrate your efforts on the illegal registry of voters rather than the voters following the law?
Call Jimmy Carter before it’s too late!!!!

Ken,
As usual I am impressed by your eloquence and your command of the facts.
Unfortunately they will NEVER make a dent into the inbred imbecility of right-wingers. They obviously are borderline retards and many of them remind me of the banjo playing kid in the movie “Deliverance”. Why should you try to explain to them the shortcomings of our health care system when Theodore and GrandMaw have first hand and irrefutable knowledge of dismal conditions in European hospitals and non-existent health care in parts of France? Of course, they cannot substantiate their faith-based claims but right-wingers don’t care. Innuendos and falsehoods are always sufficient!
Instead of wasting our time with those cretins, we (progressives) should effectively organize to prevent the takeover of this city by the cynical and dishonest Falwells. I am sure Jerry Jr. enjoys tremendously seeing us wasting our time and energy while he gathers his storm troopers for the final assault on City Council.
I was at Mark Warner’s appearance this morning and spoke to 3 City Council members there. They are all resigned to Lynchburg becoming a theocratic city (the born-again Mecca of America?). One said that many of the recently registered kids will be gone by the time of the next election for City Council. When I mentioned that the Falwells will make sure they are replaced by new zombies, he was startled! He obviously had never thought of that! Very encouraging!
There are several groups in Lynchburg concerned about the present state of affairs but their efforts are fragmented and I never sense a great sense of outrage in them (Isn’t ironical that it is me, the Froggie, who is always the most outraged?). That is precisely what the Falwells are counting on.
OK, progressives. Any comments and suggestions?
Please stop wasting your time and concentrate on important matters.

Kozmo,
Knucklehead? THAT is the pot calling the kettle black! I find it very interesting that both you and jimmy are the only ones here that propose NO supporting facts for your opinions. Heck, even Fred gives supports for his bizarre views. I do like the fact that I can now unleash and not give any supports at all to my opinion.
How did the paper route go this morning? I never did hear anything from you after you threatened me with ripping my heart out?
