Add to the debate, don’t detract from it
What do you edit? Certainly, you don’t edit letters to the editor or the political cartoons.

Letters to the editorClick to send

Can’t you edit patently stupid letters, such as a recent letter writer’s assertions that “common sense says the only way to change something that is the best is to make it worse.” Sorry, but “best” doesn’t mean “perfect.” If you don’t think America can be improved, you are not paying attention.

Even John McCain says he wants to fix America. But you shouldn’t be offended by those who say our country needs to be improved. Let’s not bury our heads in the sand. It’s not healthy.

As a Christian and liberal Democrat, I’m also tired of the tasteless, hate-filled political cartoons (mostly anti-Democratic Party) that fill your Opinion Page in vivid color. The Labor Day “cartoon” was especially vile with it’s reference to “assorted flavored condoms ages 14 years and up” and the “hug a tree/abort a baby” button.

These cartoons add nothing but more hatred to the debate at a time when we desperately need to work together for the common good.

This garbage makes me want to cancel my subscription to your newspaper.

In a bad mood?
My, but our right-wing News & Advance editorial page editor is a grumpy fellow these days. I guess it’s understandable.

I probably would be grumpy too if my party’s occupant of the White House were the most unpopular president in the history of modern polling, if I suspected the presidential candidate of my party had pandered to the most extreme elements of that party and I doubted his sincerity in doing so, if he had chosen a person who appears spectacularly unqualified as his running mate and if he were running against a candidate who had just defeated one of the toughest political operations in America in his own primary campaign.

I guess that explains why he needed a letter writer to remind him that not everyone in Lynchburg shares his dyspeptic vision, why he finds it necessary to run editorial cartoon after editorial cartoon mocking Democrats and liberals and why his editorials seem to be inspired by a steady diet of talk radio and Fox News.

My advice? Cultivate some liberal friends. I may still consider my conservative friends to be misguided, but I can assure you that they help me sharpen my thinking.

If you can’t bring yourself to do that, at least take an antacid.

bigjimm?  Keep government out of the bedroom? Then why are you proposing to have the government give rights to homosexuals?  Is that logical?

But Cosmo, I will never, ever be a lawyer!  Even I have more ethics than that!  I don’t even like to drive fast.  I could never chase ambulances!

I would really, really like to see where I said I was white?  Do you have any proof?

You liberals are great at the hot air, not so great at providing proof of anything.

Welcome to the ever-expanding club (bigjimm).  Sometimes he’s white, sometimes he’s black, sometimes he’s a Christina Falwellite, sometimes he’s an Atheist….. One day, no doubt… he will be Chinese.

Thank you bigjimm for saving me time.  You were really starting to bore me with your limited understanding of even simple things.  I realized I was dealing with a knot when you couldn’t tell me the difference between a profit and profit margin.

You propose two people being able to marry that love each other.  You are now proposing that a brother and sister can’t marry.  Why are you getting involved in the privacy between two adults?  What if the brother and sister love each other?  You are just as guilty of what you charge against the republicans.

The catholic priests that abused children were 98% homosexual abuse on little boys.  One form of perversion leads to another.  Face it Jim.  You are wishing a lifetime of pain and sorrow on people simply because you can’t face facts.  All that height must have deprived your head of oxygen.

Sorry luv2b? but I don’t see where brothers and sisters marrying enters into this, it’s just another one of your stupid statements.
I have attempted to get you to answer serious questions but you are not capable of anything other than outlandish forays into the absurd.
I have tried to engage in a serious discussion with you but it’s not possible, there is just nothing there but nonsense and I won’t comment about you or to you again.

bigjimm,

So you are ok with a brother and sister marrying?

I like the fact that almost all men like killing the unborn and depriving the unborn of their rights.

That way, the men can sow all the seeds they want, and then force the women to kill it.

Good one jim.  You should be glad your Mom didn’t do that for you.

You’re right Skeeter, McCain did make it easy. That is exactly the kind of person we need in the White House as VP.The only chill that went up my back was WOW she’s one tough woman! She is not a cottin pickin lawyer. We have way too many of them up there, lets get someone that is like the most of us.

Finally, an honest admission I thought I would never hear.  I have to give Obama credit!  I think that the surge has succeeded in ways that nobody anticipated, Obama said while refusing to retract his initial opposition to the surge. Ive already said its succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.  Quotes from interview with Bill O’Reilly.

So what’s the solution, just ignore gay people? I know a fair number of gay people, they did not choose to be the way they are.
The fact that you don’t like it changes nothing and this is what bugs the heck out of me about the new right that is usually oh so wrong with their superior social (so-called) conservatism.
Leave gay people alone and give them their rights. What goes on in a person’s home is none of the governments business. It is good for the country for everyone to live in a financially viable family whatever the makeup may be.
Inasmuch as I’m opposed to abortion, I’ll never be confronted with having one but I have no trouble minding my own business and leaving it up to the individual, her doctor, and her conscience.
It always amazes me that the high priests of the flapping right wings talk of getting government out of our lives until they try to get the votes of the religious right and then they can’t get enough of the government trying to know and control what goes on inside everyone’s home.
There might be a conservative in Washington or Richmond but I don’t know who they are and neither do you.

bigjimm,

I agree with you that everyone should have the rights afforded them according to the constitution.  That would give the unborn the same Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness that the rest of us have.  I guess you are also referring to the “gay rights” part as well.  I’ll be glad to share my thoughts on that as well.  I have my limits, you have yours.  My limit is one man, one woman.  Same as nature intended.  I’m guessing that you are not really serious about “Anyone should be able to love anyone”.  If you were, you would be able to be true to your Virginia roots and marry your sister, or brother or pet dog or pet turtle?  The divorce rate is even higher for gay couples than straight.  Look up on the CDC and check out all of the illnesses that occur because of what takes place between two men?  On top of all that, it is just plain nonsense that you go to the toilet to eat supper!  Common sense isn’t so common anymore.
