‘Mein Kampf’? Oh, that was only bluster
If one ever wondered how history would have reacted had America or Great Britain taken out Hitler before Sept. 1, 1939, recent letters to the editor provide a clue. The Forum in The News & Advance would have been filled with letters declaring “Mein Kampf” was just propaganda, the Anschluss was a natural progression for Austria and, of course, Hitler was building a Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht — with the warmongers Churchill and Roosevelt in power, he had to!
Now, I am as upset as anyone on the Left at a president who took this nation to war without congressional approval, without sanction of the United Nations and with intelligence that later proved to be false. However, Milosevic is dead, Clinton is out of office, and that all seems to be water under the bridge.
If, however, we are speaking of Iraq, none of the above apply. With the yellowcake story, the Left has conceded that Hussein had the foundation of WMDs. Previously, they conceded that al-Qaida was probably the only Islamic terror group in the world that Hussein was not directly supporting. They’ve conceded that Hussein was shooting at U.S. forces who were merely enforcing the peace treaty. And they’ve conceded that Hussein and his sons were human monsters who were fully capable of using WMDs against the United States, as they did against their own people.
What the letter writers unwittingly have also revealed is, the Left simply didn’t, and doesn’t, care. If a 10 megaton warhead were headed toward Richmond from Baghdad, they might have found it in themselves to take action. Fortunately, America was blessed with a president who wasn’t going to wait for that.
As reviled as President Bush is today, I firmly believe that historians of the future will see him in a much clearer and better light.
And even if they don’t, at least they will still have an America about which to write history because of his stand.
CAREY MARTIN

The company you keep
There are many reasons why I won’t vote for Barack Obama. He has no experience, I don’t favor surrender in Iraq and in the war against terrorism, a further weakened military, nationalized health care, higher taxes, unsecured borders and unchecked immigration. I don’t like paying $4 a gallon for gasoline while the politicians prance and preen and act as if they can solve our energy problems with hot air and empty promises.
The energy solution will come from the company or entrepreneur (hopefully American) least fettered by bureaucrats and regulation. Yes, drill more and spend less!
While any one of the above reasons would disqualify a candidate they are not the main reason I will not vote for Obama. There are actually two more: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. I think that each is willing to destroy the country so they can keep power and use it to their advantage. Pelosi is wealthy mainly because of her husband’s money, and Reid has become wealthy from shady real estate dealings while a United States senator. They are both radicals, and I don’t trust them. They would run over President Obama as if he weren’t even there while at the same time daring him to use his veto power to stop them.
John McCain isn’t perfect, no one is; but he is more conservative than any of the Democrats. He has promised to nominate conservative judges to the Supreme Court and to continue the war against terrorism. He would certainly use his veto pen to stop Pelosi, Reid and the Democrats as they continue to weaken America.

Ken,
“Bluster” is a good war for what Carey Martin has written and also for most of what is posted here as conservative thought but is, in reality, just bluster and drivel. Even a large number of Republics (sic) oppose Bush and his war. The problem with this war, other than the fact it is in the wrong country, is that the nation has been instructed by our idiot in chief to just - shop. The nation as a whole is just, finally, beginning to suffer with dur Shrub-wacker in chief’s failed policy that has resulted in $4.00 a gallon gas, an economy that is close to a depression, and a national debt that is unfathomable. In fact, not only do the pansy conservatives on this board use bluster, but they have picked it up over the last 7 years from the idiot son of George H. W. Bush, Fox News, and Rush. They used to look frightening, but now they just look stupid. Peace.

Hmmm,
Unprovoked war of aggression.
Did Bosnia attack the US?
Did Vietnam attack the US?
Did Germany attack the US?
Did North Korea attack the US?
How many troops do we have in the Balkans? (6,000) Clinton said they would only be there 9 months. Was that another of his lies?
Why is a premptive strike good under a democRAT, but not good under a republican?
What war will naive Obama start like his democRAT predecessors?
HE HAS NO GRAVITAS!!!!!!!!

You are talking international law Fred and law that is made up as you go along by victors of an armed conflict when the vanquished surrenders without terms.
Bush is only subject to U.S. law in this instance. Is he guilty of immoral behavior and un-American behavior? You bet. So what.

bigjimm,
You are confusing reality with principles.
If destroying a country (Iraq), killing hundreds of thousands of its people and sendind two million of them in exile, all the results of an unprovoked war of aggression, do not constitute war crimes for you (not to mention crimes against humanity), what does?
I agree with you that if the Nazis had won WWII, they would have destroyed the Jewish race (to the great delight of many in the US), and there would not have been trials at Nuremberg. That is the reality. Principles are an entirely different thing.

Fred
A war crime is what happens to the leaders of the losing side in a war.
I certainly think he is guilty of breaking U.S. law at least where conspiracy is concerned vis-a-vis the Valerie Plame situation.
The right-wing echo machine can continue to belittle Ms. Plame’s position but the CIA is on the record as saying she was running covert operatives and for political gain, or just political payback, Mr. Bush put people’s lives at risk.
This whole thing about using executive privilege to keep his toadies from talking to congress is just a pitiful attempt to cover up a political hatchet job.
No one is interested in impeaching this incompetent little man, they just want him gone.

bigjimm,
What exactly is your definition of war crimes?

I don’t think Bush is guilty of war crimes, I just think he has been wrong about 90% of the time.
As to the parties flip flopping in the past 40 years, that has to do more with civil rights and the South than anything else. To say that Social Security and the reforms of Roosevelt’s New Deal were right-wing programs is hilariously ridiculous.
I love it when the right wing that loathes the U.N. hides behind it when they need it to justify their actions.
It’s just pathetic.
What’s next, opening diplomatic talks with Iran? Oops, seems like it’s already happening.

bigjimm,
With all due respect, back in Roosevelts days, the democrats WERE the right wing. The parties have changed positions in the last 40 years. That is why people should be true to their core values and not to a particular party. Parties change simply to get power or stay in power. The democRATS will drill off-shore in a heartbeat if it helps them to stay in power. The republicans will dance in the streets in San Fran with all of the perverts if it gets them into power. Period. Both of them are the same. In that context, if GWB is guilty of war crimes, then you can lump a few of the distinguished individuals below in with him. Methinks that maybe he isn’t and that is why the democRATS haven’t done anything.
If the US is guilty of war crimes, then you may want to let the other countries over there in on it. As of August 23, 2006, there were 21 non-U.S. military forces contributing armed forces to the Coalition in Iraq. These 21 countries were: Albania, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Poland, Romania, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.

I have also attached UN Resolution 1441 that shows all of the previous resolutions passed by the UN as well as which one he had violated (all of them). If the UN is to have any validity at all, there must be consequences to actions. Darfur is a great example of UN inability to do anything in the world.

How many UN Resolutions have been passed demanding that the US end its “occupation” of Iraq?
As Mr. Obama says.."Just words. Only words”.

Boy it just gets worse everyday. Wake up
people! Neither of these candidates are
worthy of a single vote. Why do people
keep choosing sides as if one is the
almighty good? This is the most corrupt
government in the world now and we are
all pretty much paying for their inability and cover ups. Stop voting for
these losers. As for me, I do not need
nor want a President. They serve no
purpose whatsoever on the “real world”.
Here’s a real truth to live by.
