The context of that pesky Obama quote
In his July 19 letter to the editor, Robert DeLong misquoted from Barack Obama’s book, “The Audacity of Hope,” removed all context and followed this by the familiar “if it walks like a duck” aphorism.

Letters to the editorClick to send

Righttruth.typepad.com has the actual quote from page 261 of the book: “Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

While many Arab and Pakistani Americans may be Muslim, Obama is standing by Americans. As an American (and descendent of immigrants, as are most of us) that’s exactly where I want my president, whether Democratic or Republican.

Still for McCain
Barack Obama did not say he would side with “the Muslims,” which could easily be read as meaning he would side with the world’s Muslim population even if it meant working against the best interests of the United States. He said he would side with “them,” referring to his mention of immigrant communities and specifically to “Arab and Pakistani Americans.”

Furthermore, he was speaking of an “ugly direction” similar to the mass internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

This false quote goes hand in hand with the equally false rumor that Obama is a Muslim.

With this said, I trust that this will satisfy anyone that had issues with this quote in question. I still believe Obama is a danger to our national security, will raise our taxes, greatly impede our goal for independence from foreign oil and take our economy in a further downward spiral that will require decades to pull out of after he would be out of office.

And I still plan to vote for John McCain.

Work for change
In a recent letter to the editor it was stated that Sen. Barack Obama would stand with the Muslims.

The actual quote from “The Audacity Of Hope” is on page 261. After writing about many hard-working immigrants who played by the rules and have become citizens, he then goes on to write specifically about Arab and Pakistani Americans following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: “They need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

He is talking about citizens of the United States! He did not even use the word Muslim. Find out the facts; don’t rely on ads, chain e-mails and smear tactics.

I am not better off then I was eight years ago, and I don’t think the county is either. I will proudly vote for Obama, and if any of you would like to help in this cause, stop by the Obama headquarters on the corner of 12th and Main streets in downtown Lynchburg. Together we can make a change in our leadership that we can believe in.

David,

You tell me what a “typical white person” is.  That is what Obama called his grandmother.  Since Obama has more experience than Bush legislatively, maybe you can tell me....

What is Obamas three major legislative victories, state or federal over the past 8 years that he has served?

Has Obamessiah ever accomplished anything?

Actually, luv, Obama has much more expereince than George Bush.  Bush never served in any legislative capacity before he was governor of Texas.  He had the name--Bush, and a stint with the Texas Rangers.  Period.  And,what is this “typical white person?” What is a typical white person, anyway, luv.  Your invectives are as childish as your postings.  I don’t think anyone takes you seriously.

David,

So since GW Bush didn’t have any experience and has been a miserable failure for 8 years, and Obama has even less experience than GW, you want Obama?

Typical white person.

Sorry (oldman66) but it doesn’t even come close.  .."Obama is a liberal democrat is he not?”..  Oh, I forgot, we have had such a wonderful experience with a dumb-as-a-post “Conservative Republican” that we just MUST do it again.  What better qualifications can there be than graduating at the bottom of your class and then on to a career of being shot down?  Who needs a President who is smart anyway?

And what experience did George Bush have before he was crowned President?  We all know that he was governor of Texas.  But did we all know that the governor of Texas is little more than a figurehead?  The Texas constitution gives almost all power, even executive-like power, to the state legislature.  In fact, when measured against other state chief executives, the governor of Texas ranks 49th.  Of course, none of that matters to the people who support him and because the real power of this particular president lies in the office of the vice president.

Ms. Chadbourne - Truth in fact that most Americans are not “better-off” than they were eight years ago so you are not a member of any elite club. Fact is - the entire Nation has gotten progressively in worse condition since (9/11/01) and in particular since energy companies have decided to maximize profits each quarter causing most od us to tighten the purse strings. In your slanted letter against the Bush administration I must say he is no more at fault for our current economic mess than is our liberal democratically controlled Congress that has set idly by and allowed current situations to develop. I further remind you that the present Congress enjoys a rating lower than the President. Senator Obama is a member of this body, is he not? One of our current Senators, an “out-of- stater” of the tax & spend mold is a liberal Democrat. With the same philosophy is our present and former governor having mismanaged our state government. Both “out-of-staters” using offices of Virginia to further their own political agendas.

Finally, I hope you can cash the blank check that Obama is writing, but hasn’t, can’t, and will never sign. The Clinton talked about National Health Care for eight years and I’m hearing the same rhetoric from Obama, but I’ve heard the wind blow before.

Godfrey Daniel!!! Mr. Evans’ quote has already come to pass except it is for the next president to work on.  He write: “a danger to our national security, will raise our taxes, greatly impede our goal for independence from foreign oil and take our economy in a further downward spiral that will require decades to pull out of after he would be out of office.” That describes President Bush’s administration perfectly.

I do not feel safer than I did 8 years ago, with failed energy policies, we are paying much more for oil than we were 8 years ago, my taxes haven’t gone down like my millionaire boss’ taxes, and the economy can’t downward spiral any more than it has under Bush. And, he is right in his conclusion . . . it will take decades to clean up the mess Bush has left behind, and McCain will only add to that mess.  And he is still voting for McCain?  Oy vey.

We have had some work done on the house. Each time we trusted people with years of experience (usually 30 they claimed), it ended up in disasters. We just had a new range installed by the “professionals” from the most prestigious outfit in town (bragging, as usual). They just came back to do it all over again! Now, we trust exclusively people who have less than a couple of years of experience and we have never been more pleased!

We don’t need for president a guy who has for experience bombing people from 30,000 feet. Is he not the same guy who was chanting “Bomb, Bomb Iran ...”?

Nothing qualifies or trains anyone to be President. There is no known training for the job. Mr. Obama’s presumptive opponent is famous for being shot down and being a POW. This may speak to his character although I’m not sure about that. It doesn’t qualify him to be President. A second career in the Senate is probably a negative as well.
Let’s hope both of them are capable of rising to the challenge, for one of them will have to.
There is one positive here, they couldn’t be any worse than what we have now.

Mr. Wafflefoot - your question to mr. Evans - “How about a little evidence of your beliefs” can be answered with this question and statement. Senator Obama is a liberal democrat is he not? Eight years in the Illinois state legislature, a yet to be completed term in the federal Congress and a “whirl-wind” tour of the Middle East does not a Commander-in-Chief make. I hope this answers your question.
