The Debate’s On, and Voters Are the Victors

Saturday morning, common sense must have prevailed in the headquarters of Mark Warner’s campaign for U.S. Senate.
A few weeks ago, the former governor stiffed the nonpartisan League of Women Voters, refusing to agree to participate in the League’s planned statewide debate in the U.S. Senate race. Republican Jim Gilmore, trailing badly in the polls and with practically no money in the bank, signed on early; Democrat Warner, with a double-digit lead and millions in his account, balked and pleaded a scheduling conflict.
Right.
Gilmore may be celebrating today, but Warner’s agreeing to the debate just might be the final nail in the acerbic Republican’s political coffin.
After enduring scathing editorial comments from newspapers across the state and across the ideological divide, the Warner campaign evidently decided enough was enough and agreed to a live, televised debate with Gilmore.
On Oct. 3, the two former governors will face off in Roanoke in the studios of WSLS-NBC 10, owned by Media General, which also owns The News & Advance. The debate will begin at 7 p.m. and last an hour.
Gilmore, the dictionary definition of “underdog,” desperately needs the debate and the statewide exposure that will come with it. Previously, the two had debated just once, back in July at the state bar association’s annual convention at the Homestead resort. They have a debate coming up Thursday in Fairfax before members of the county’s chamber of commerce that will be televised on a regional cable network.
He’s running a shoestring campaign operation, boasting about putting campaign ads online on YouTube and conducting so-called Working Families Tours around the state, trying to garner a little publicity for his flagging senatorial effort.
Gilmore’s advisers are high-fiving themselves today over news of the statewide debate. “We’re popping champagne,” strategist Dick Leggitt told Media General News Service. “The alligator has taken the bait.”
They had better enjoy the buzz they’ve gotten from their cheap booze now, before the hangover sets in.
Gilmore has tried to paint Warner as a liar for promising, during his 2001 gubernatorial campaign, not to raise taxes, but then pushing a $1.4 billion revenue package through the General Assembly to balance the state’s books. The fiction that Gilmore has been trying to sell Virginia’s voters is that he left his successor a solid, balanced state budget that the Democrat then proceeded to muck up.
That’s simply not the case, and Gov. Gilmore knows better.
During the Oct. 3 debate, Gilmore will try to tar Warner as a lying, tax-and-spend liberal, but he’s going to have to answer for his mishandling of the state’s finances. Virginia’s revenue picture began to slide in early 2000 when the tech bubble burst and the national economy slid into recession — fully a year and a half before Gilmore left office. Gilmore ignored warnings from financial experts and General Assembly leaders that the economy was tanking, intent on preserving his signature car tax repeal. He and his political cronies replaced good fiscal policy with smoke and mirrors to keep the car tax repeal alive, and Warner had to clean up the mess when he took office in 2002.
That’s the truth, Gov. Gilmore, and we relish the prospect of Mark Warner calling you on that pitiful record before a statewide audience.

Oldman666 I’m sorry. You have a lot on your plate with trying to lay blame on so many “tax and spend liberals” even when republicans controlled the legislatures for so long. It must be tough being a right wing partisan when they’ve been screwing things up for so many long long years.

big jimm: “Raising taxes when there is a need” you say. The reason for most of the “needs” is the give away programs of the of the liberal tax and spend Democrats. The majority of the cases constitute “buying votes”. Gilmore gives a tax break - the liberals so ballistic. Give/show me proof that Warner’s tax hike was justified. If as you proclaim, Warner “fixed” Gilmore’s misque and left the state in such great financial condition - why is Timmy Kaine up the creek - no boat, no paddle - nothing - trying so desperately after 2 1/2 years in office to raise taxes? User fees for every service offered by the state has increased. Never mind that most are programs implememted by the state - i.e., license decals, vehicle inspections, driver’s licenses, etc. I seem to remember an ill-fated program to issue citations to in-state motorists for traffic law violations that Kaine had to eat.
I encapsulated the Roger Coleman story in a prior post. What part of the “whole” story did I have incorrect or ad lib? “The death penalty dosen’t make it right” you cant. The fact that a rapist/murderer is no longer sucking air makes it “right” as far as I’m concerned. (Presently a person in an Ohio prison in a similar situation is objecting to the death penalty; calling that lethal injection for himself would be cruel and inhumane. He has gained 70 pounds since being incarcerated and the veins in his arm will be hard to find. Poor guy. Seems he and an accomplice were convicted of rape, torture, murder of (2) college students. Sorry pal- you couldn’t live in a civilized society so you’re being sent to the next world).
Given the choice of “Owl” Gore and “Ketchup-man” Kerry; I’d vote “W” twice more.

Here is the recurring theme “tax and spend liberal”. You’d think after eight long years of the republicans emptying the treasury would put the quits to that simple phrase for simple people. Raising taxes when there is a distinct need is somehow practically evil but cutting taxes for populist appeal is a great thing for republicans. Unfunded mandates is another thing republicans are famous for, giving with one hand while taking away with the other.
I will take adopted sons with some ability over an incompetent “real” Virginian, any day. Jim Gilmore while governor was just a populist one trick pony who left the state in a terrible financial position that Warner now gets blamed for fixing. This is typical right wing memory loss and spin control.
As to Roger Coleman, I encourage everyone to read the whole story without the histrionics and opinion of the right-wing partisan oldman.
The fact that 3/4 of people are for the death penalty doesn’t make it right and remember, the majority of people in VA voted for ol’ W twice and if that doesn’t prove that Virginians can be wrong, nothing does.

So much for impartial reporting. Guess this is what transpires in a one-horse town - The Burg - (1) each of a television station and a newspaper. Here the N&A;is handing Gilmore his head.
Warner is indeed a liar. Getting a 1.4 billion dollar tax increase after publicaly stating he would not raise taxes. State law requires Virginia have a balanced budget at year’s end - so how did Gilmore leave Warner in a muck?
Warner indeed is an out-of-state tax and spend liberal masquerating as a Virginian. Had he left the state in such fine fiscal shape should Kaine 2 1/2 years into office be experiencing a budget “short-fall” and clamoring for more taxes? Warner is just what this state doen’t need - another out-of-stater in Congress with Jim Webb representing the interests of Virginians.
Does the name of Roger Coleman strike a cord with anyone? This is the guy that was executed for rape/murder of his sister-in-law out in southwest Virginia. The guy even served as a pallbearer at the woman’s funeral. Convicted and sentenced in a court of law by his peers. Some months prior to Warner leaving office he decides to
test Coleman’s DNA. Results of the tests proved Coleman’s guilt, but can you imagine the mileage Warner would have gained had the tests proved otherwise? Defense lawyers would still be lavishing praise on the guy. Last I checked 3/4 of the country were in favor of the death penalty. Virginians take heed, these liberals are legislating their agendas into our lives and you can only stop it by not voting for them. Send a Virginian to Washington - not a transient from Indiana.
