An Appomattox woman died Tuesday of injuries she sustained in a Monday afternoon crash, according to Virginia State Police.

Sgt. David Cooper said Diane Smith Stephens, 52, died at 5:11 p.m. Tuesday, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

The wreck happened on U.S. 460 in Appomattox County, about two miles east of Appomattox town limits, at about 2:40 p.m.

Stephens, driving a 2000 Chevrolet Metro in the left lane of U.S. 460, had just passed a van, when she lost control of her car and drove into the median, Cooper said.

She overcorrected, flipping her car, which ended upside down in the right lane.

Stephens, who was not wearing her seatbelt, was thrown from the car.

She was airlifted to Lynchburg General Hospital where she died more than a day later.

Trooper M.E. Croft is investigating the accident.
