A Concord woman was hospitalized with serious injuries after she crashed her car into a tree off the side of Chestnut Mountain Road in Appomattox County on Friday night, according to state police.

Trooper M.R. Heath said Tina Litchford, 45, wrecked her 1993 Nissan Sentra into a tree at about 7:10 p.m.

She was headed west on Chestnut Mountain Road, in the area of Mount Athos Road, when she ran off the right side of the road.

The Concord Volunteer Fire & Rescue departments responded to the scene and had to cut Litchford out of the car. The extraction took about 23 minutes, said Concord Fire Chief Jody Mayberry.

Mayberry said he did not know the extent of Litchford’s injuries, but that they appeared to be severe.

Litchford was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital by the state’s MedFlight helicopter.

A Lynchburg General Hospital nursing supervisor said Litchford was transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center in serious condition late Friday night.

Heath said the accident is still under investigation, and no charges had been filed as of Friday night.
