A 61-year-old Virginia Beach man died Sunday morning when his motorcycle crossed over a median on U.S. 460 and hit another vehicle, Virginia State Police said.
Trooper Brad Crews said Kenneth Leroy Plopper was traveling eastbound on U.S. 460 in Campbell County when he crossed over the median and hit a Ford Escape traveling west on U.S. 460 head on.
Plopper died at the scene and his wife, Mary Lou Plopper, 61, was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital by MedFlight and is in critical condition, Crews said.
The accident happened just before 11 a.m. near Turkey Foot Road. Crews said the couple was with a group of bikers when the accident occurred. Plopper’s motorcycle, which ended up on the side of the road, caught fire. Crews could not confirm what caused Plopper to cross the median.
Crews said there were four passengers in the Escape. They were all taken to Lynchburg General Hospital with minor injuries and have been released.

Recd an email from CMA that Mary Lou has had several surgeries involving her stomach and intestines, they will take care of that and then address her orthopedic issues. Please keep Mary Lou and her family in your thoughts and prayers

For the mother of the children. They are riders with the Gold Wing Road Riders Club and also with Christian Motorcycle Association. Mary Lou’s family is on the west coast but her son is with her at the Lynchburg hospital.

I am the mother of the two children that were in the SUV in this accident. I first would like to say how truely blessed my family feels and thankful that no one in the car was hurt. We are however very saddened by the tragic death of Kenneth Plopper. I want to get intouch with the family to express our sympathy but do not have any information. If someone can share more information with me it would be greatly appreciated. We continue to pray for Mrs.Plopper.

From a local news channel’s website, it states “Police do not think speed or alcohol were factors in this accident. They say illness may have caused Plopper to cross the median and hit the SUV. They’re still trying to figure out how he died.“
My fiance and I saw the accident just after it happened & couldn’t figure out how they hit head on. I’m terribly sorry about your loss! Please keep us posted on Mary Lou Plopper and her condition.
