People attending Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign stop at E.C. Glass High School tonight will not be allowed to park in The Plaza.
“Anyone planning on attending the Obama event scheduled for this evening at the E. C. Glass gym should be aware of a change in parking arrangements,“ city officials said in a news release. “Parking will not be allowed at the Plaza on Memorial Avenue. Satellite parking has been arranged at Lynchburg City Stadium on the Fort Avenue side of the parking lot. Buses will shuttle attendees to E. C. Glass beginning at 3:30 p.m. Shuttles will return attendees back to the City Stadium after the event.“
The shuttle fleet will be made up of six school buses making continuous loops between the two sites, according to JoAnn Martin, director of communications for the city. The buses will likely stop running around 7 p.m. and then resume operation following the town hall’s conclusion to return attendees to their cars.
The Plaza is owned by Liberty University.
“There was no conversation at all,“ said Lee Beaumont, director of auxiliary services. “... Nobody bothered to talk to us about it.“
He added LU had multiple concerns about allowing the event parking, including the impact on tenants of the midtown shopping center and the school’s liability if an accident were to occur. There were also apprehensions about how the participation would affect the school’s status as a 501(3)(c) organization, a designation that prohibits partisanship.
The school has previously invited Obama to speak at its campus, and has played host to former presidential candidates, including Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul.
“When you only have half a day or a day to react to something, you can’t make a good decision,“ Beaumont said, adding the school based its decision on practical concerns.
“We’re not trying to make a political statement,“ he said.
LU notified local police of their decision this morning. The school plans to post signs and have campus police on hand to alert drivers to the change. The security officers will explain to drivers that Plaza parking is reserved for patrons, Beaumont said.
Martin said the city only learned this morning the Plaza would be off-limits for event parking.
“It was our understanding arrangements had been made (with The Plaza),“ she said. “We were told by the local campaign there would be parking there, and that was also printed on their tickets. I think they were operating under the assumption that was public property.
“The only reason the city got involved,“ Martin said, “was because it would be a public safety issue to have that many people there trying to park in a place they were not going to be able to park in.“
Police officers will be on scene to direct traffic, and electronic sign boards will be posted as well. Martin said she believed all parking on school grounds has been reserved for campaign staff, media, and those attending freshman orientation.

I understand now…if the Obama Campaign had just contacted LU, rather than assuming they could park at the Plaza, they could had rented the space. The same would have been with any political candidate, not bias because of who it is. By the way, WSET, thank you for getting to the truth and informing the public and clarifying this.

Give me a break, LU! You’re not letting people park there because he snubbed your invite and you don’t agree with his politics. You never cease to amaze me, nor do you ever cease to make me feel ashamed you have such a high prominence in this community with some of the absurd things that are said and done on your campus! Too many times have I told people where I’m from and get the “Oh, isn’t that the town Falwell owns?“, and I reply , “yeah… pretty much…“ as I look down at the floor.

Here we go again….How can LU ever say they are not biased, how can they ever say they have no favorites, how can they ever say they follow Jesus and support the devil like they do. This is a sad day for LU and the Burg. Just when we thought LU and the rest of Jerry’s gang of thugs was going to be a part of the future and not a part of the destruction of America. I today will never vote for a Republican again.

Once again, Liberty shows that they are NOT willing to cooperate with the community. What else should we expect from our Fundy Neocon neighbors? If this had been McCain at E.C. Glass they’d be announcing on spirit fm for everybody to park at the plaza. I bet if we put collection plates at all entrances they might change their mind.

We were informed this morning at Liberty that the significant reason Obama supporters, or objectors for that matter, were not allowed to park at the plaza was due to Liberty’s tax status.
I’m not sure the number, but because of what Liberty is classified they are not allowed to endorse or show favoritism to any candidate.
The plaza is owned by Liberty University so therefore anything related to the event cannot take place there.
Though Liberty often seems to favorite the conservative and the Republican, they have made their stage available to candidates of either party, or alternative parties. Last year Gov. Mike Huckabee, Congressman Ron Paul, and Gov. Tim Kaine all addressed LU students.

My goodness. The last time I was in Lychburg there were 50 or less cars parked in the plaza lot. Again, Falwell and Liberty are being the’Good Christian” that we read so much about. Wake up people. He who gets all, gives nothingm

Well, maybe the local Obama campaign should’ve asked instead of assuming they could use the Plaza! What idiot ever thought this was public property? Right. An idiot working for Obama.

That makes sense but if it is not being used why not share? I don’t think that is being socialistic, it’s just sharing the space.

I’m sure it has nothing to do with who owns the Plaza…

the reason is the plaza is private property. America has not turned into a socialist state yet!
