Research group: Teen drivers thrice as likely to die in wrecks

New teen drivers are three times more likely to get in a fatal wreck than adults, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute says.
To reduce teen-related deaths, VTTI on Thursday announced a study it is conducting to enhance teen driver education through the use of electronic “coaching” or monitoring systems.
A Bedford County group of concerned parents and officials, as well as a similar group in Montgomery County, approached VTTI to design such a program to combat the growing number of fatalities involving young drivers in their localities.
“We have had a rash of teen deaths due to over-corrections (in driving),” said Sherri Box, VTTI communications director.
The institute’s initiatives to curve teen deaths will be implemented over the next two years, with the first as early as this fall, VTTI announced in a press release Thursday.
