John McCain kept his three-point lead over Barack Obama in a Mason-Dixon Research poll of likely Virginia voters that was released today.

The Republican’s 48-to-45 advantage in the Mason-Dixon poll once again emphasizes Virginia’s status as a battleground state, because the poll’s margin of error is four points. McCain’s margin, of only three points, means the pollster can’t be confident about who’s ahead.

In the Lynchburg-Danville region, the Mason-Dixon poll gives McCain an 11-point advantage over Democrat Obama, but the margin of error is higher for the poll’s regional breakdowns.

In Roanoke and Southwest Virginia, McCain is ahead by a 54-39 margin.

The Mason-Dixon poll interviewed 625 registered voters by phone this week, Monday through Wednesday.

Obama holds a strong lead in Northern Virginia (57%-37%), but McCain has wide margins in Virginia’s rural regions and the Richmond Metro area.

The race remains very close in the Hampton Roads/Tidewater region.

Two other recent polls also are in the news today.

A Time Magazine/CNN poll shows Obama with a solid 8-point lead in Virginia, based on calls to likely voters that were made Saturday through Monday.

American Research Group also polled Virginia and found voters favoring McCain by a 49-to-46 margin, based on calls Saturday through Monday.

I can’t understand why McCain still leads in the polls.  We can’t afford another republican administration in Washington.  To be totally frank, I’m not sure there is much difference between what a republican and democratic administration can do.  Both McCain and Obama voted on the 800 billion dollar bail out rescue bill.  McCain is saying he is going to cut pork barrel spending, yet he votes yes on this pork-laden rescue package?  I’m sure that neither Obama or McCain took the time to even read all 450-plus pages of the bill they voted to support.  That is just plain irresponsible, which seems to be a non-partisan characteristic these days.

Yeah Doofus- get real. Ain’t either one of those candidates gives a flying jumping bean about common people. Voting for one rich guy or another rich guy, isn’t going to make a pile of beans difference down here on the farm…

There must be million of millionaires in Virginia voting for McCain. Otherwise, McSame and Caribou Barbie wouldn’t be doing so well in the polls. But then again, we are talking about the middle class here, with all those 5 million dollar bank accounts.
Polls will shift back and forth. So far all they tell me is that it’s still a close race. This is due to people voting for polarized issues. They vote on 1 issue. I know people who vote on the abortion issue alone. It don’t matter what the rest of their platform is about. We can happily get in that handbasket for a quick ride straight down as long as our pet issue is along for the ride.
People want things simple, black and white, no middle ground, you are either for us or you are against us. Welcome to millenium politics.

eyeinthesky: Give it a rest. Biden with his (35) years of congressional experience was the same in the debate Thursday night as always - a broken record. Having reached for the “brass ring” twice and failing miserably - does that indicate anything?

General Comment If I May: Now we have discontent with the pollsters, their conducting methods, type phones people have - Gosh, is there no end to this madness?

looksee: Sho nuff - the Democrats are for the working man - our tax base.

Mason-Dixon Research: 625 registered voters
CNN: 684 registered voters

Those numbers might give you a good guess as to how Lynchburg will vote this election, but not the entire state of Virginia. I really wish research companies would do more research to support their numbers.

Joe Biden showed in the debate tonight why he is ready to serve, and Sarah Palin showed why she needs to finish her term as Alaska’s gov. She is not a bad person—just so unqualified, and so lacking when compared to a candidate of experience like Biden. She seemed to be repeating slogans instead of giving real answers to the questions.  For Republicans, the August “surprise” will be the November dud. Don’t blame Sarah Palin: blame John McCain, he picked her.

I am amazed at all the hate coming from these blogs.  What ever happened to tolerance and diversity.  Just because someone disagrees with you is not reason to start hinting that they are uneducated and ingnorant.  From now on, try to focus on issues and stop spewing hate.  It only turns people off to your message.

There is ALWAYS an “OCTOBER SURPRISE” with Karl Rove Republicans so I am waiting….I predict that should Palin fail to perform tonight, she will be toast by the weekend….I think however she will come thru because she will have been trained to speak her gibberish in sentences rather than commas.

As to the polls, I think Obama is polling very low compared to what the actual count is…many under 40s do not have land lines….only cell phones.

Hopefuly citizens will vote with their brains rather than their prejudices.  If he were anglo saxon, he would be 20 points ahead….and why isnt he considered half white rather than ‘black’ not that “black” is bad, I just am curious.
