A Fincastle man is dead after his pickup truck ran off the side of Virginia 24 in Bedford County and caught fire Wednesday afternoon.

Virginia State Trooper B.P. Long said Scott William Adams, 24, was driving east on Virginia 24 about 2½ miles west of Staunton River High School around 12:30 p.m.

Adams’ 1994 Chevrolet Silverado ran off the left side of the road, struck two trees and burst into flames.

Long said police don’t know what caused Adams to run off the road.

The circumstances, he said, indicated that Adams might have fallen asleep at the wheel, or may have had a medical condition that caused the truck to leave the road.

He added that Adams might have been dead before his vehicle hit the trees.

Adams died at the scene, though Long said an autopsy will have to be completed by the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke, in order to determine what caused his death.
