Appomattox County Sheriff Wilson Staples confirmed this morning that an Appomattox man was found dead Tuesday night after a logging accident.
Larry Kyle Doss, 62, of the 1200 block of Oak Ridge Road, was found pinned under a tree off Rocks Church Road, near Bowler Lane, Appomattox County Deputy David O’Brien said Tuesday night.
Workers from the Pamplin Fire Department, Appomattox Rescue Squad and sheriff’s office responded, but Doss was pronounced dead at the scene, Staples said.
“Mr. Doss had been working this tract of timber for a period of time and was working by himself,” the sheriff said. “A local individual went in to check because they had not seen him come out of the area and discovered him pinned beneath the tree.”
Warren Taylor, a longtime friend of Doss’, said the man was an independent logger.
“He worked by himself, but he was always a careful and conscientious logger,” Taylor said. “This is a shock to everyone.”
He said the logging business is always dangerous, but it’s unclear what went wrong Tuesday or what time it happened.
“I’ve known him and worked with him for 30 years,” he said. “He was a great man.”
