The Amherst County Board of Supervisors could get a final recommendation tonight on a controversial housing proposal in Madison Heights.

Last month, the planning commission voted 4-2, with a member absent, to hold off on rezoning several acres on Lakeview Drive for an affordable housing complex.

More than 20 proposed units would be available for elderly and disabled persons if the plan passes. At a public hearing last month, several spoke in favor, while some opposed it.

While proponents say the project would meet a definite need for housing that county officials can’t ignore, those against it contend it’s not an appropriate use in the surrounding area.

Ron Mittelman, the developer, said he chose Lakeview Drive due to its proximity to public transportation and business.

Some planners have hinted approval could be considered “spot zoning.” County Attorney J. Vaden Hunt has informed supervisors during review of other cases that such zoning is not inappropriate when it meets a public need.

Also tonight, the board will hold public hearings on a proposed noise ordinance that would use decibel readers for enforcement and proposed changes to water and sewer rates.

“Affordable Housing Complex” means taxpayer funded crime zone. Guess the people in the area will have a new place to get drugs, get shot, raped, robbed and something new to be dangerous to the area residents. This is a waste of taxpayer money.
