The Fifth Congressional District race between incumbent Rep. Virgil Goode and Democrat Tom Perriello has grown tighter, a poll by Survey USA suggested Wednesday.

As the two well-funded candidates pepper the airwaves with advertising, Goode’s lead stands at 55 percent to 42 percent, according to the poll’s survey of 680 likely voters. They were interviewed by phone on Monday and Tuesday.

The Survey USA poll was conducted for WDBJ-TV in Roanoke and WJLA-TV in Washington. Its margin of error is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

Among voters age 18 to 49, Goode led by 4 points, down from 33 points two months ago, Survey USA said.

In an Aug. 13 poll by the same organization, Goode held a 64-30 advantage over the political newcomer from Albemarle County.

Goode is a six-term Congressman who was first elected as a Democrat. He switched to the Republican Party in 2002.

Perriello, a lawyer and the son of a Charlottesville-area pediatrician, worked with peacemaking and human rights groups in Africa and Afghanistan.

I just want to say that Virgil Goode has done a great job for the 5th Congressional District. He is a man of intregrity and you can count on him when you ask him something. He knows the people in Southside Virginia, a gentleman and a man of his word.

He has done a lot for Southside Virginia and will continue. The liberal democrats(California and New York) have funneled money to his opponent to oust him. Why does Caliornia and New York care about Virginia, especially the 5th Congressional District?
I am proud to say that my vote will be for Virgil as well as my entire family. Southside Virginians know who is doing what’s right. That’s why Virgil will be re-elected.

Perriello is the man and Goode needs to go! Perriello’s has shown how he has helped America and shows it in the commercial where he fought in Afghanistan. He was born and raised here and knows the people best after having spent his whole life fighting our fight here! Goode can’t even speak right and those around here who taulk like him need to go. GO Perriello!!

I’m so tired of people that think that voting for the other party is actually going to be a change. At least Goode has a proven history of helping his constituents out. Regardless, check out LP.org

I am so tired of the Republican attacks on the Democratic candidates. These days, the Republicans aren’t focusing their attacks on what Democrats would actually DO if elected and how they can do better, but inane things like making Democrats look like New York mobsters or saying they’re palling around with terrorists or, worse yet, insinuating that they ARE a terrorist because of their middle name or incessant rumors that they’re Muslim, no matter how many times they say they’re a Christian. The Republicans have sunk to a new low, making up stuff just to get a knee-jerk reaction from gullible, narrow-minded people. They are preying on people’s fear and prejudice, and I’m afraid it’s going to work. God help us all if this country elects a president based on fear, bias, hysterical hype and inuendo and not the things that matter. Even if I agreed with everything John McCain said, and I don’t, I couldn’t vote for someone who has taken such a long trip down the low road. I’d write in Mickey Mouse first.

I hope his lead slips even further, it seems like mccain’s nasty attack ad’s have trickled down to Goode’s campaign, and i am specifically talking about the add that is “ darkened” thus making Perriello appear to be of Arab decent, could this be another fear tactic? Their are quite a few folks sitting out there in TV land in their “RURAL”...neighborhoods, that do not actually read the newspapers ( maybe they can’t read anyway) or only listen to ...god-forbid…FOX NEWS, that would be very swayed in their vote, seeing a DARKENED ad on Tv of Perriello would certainly affect the way they vote! Believe it or not ppl. there is still a lot of racism in RURAL VIRGINIA.I wish these folks would have at least one original thought, try and look at the issues, not just sit by grandpa on the couch staring blankly at false TV adds!
And, NO, Perriello is not like Goode he can actually speak the queens english without sounding like he just got off the bus from bluefield, W.V.!!
