The dialogue began slowly.
Five members of the gay activist group Soulforce held hands Wednesday afternoon and stood to face about 50 Liberty University students behind the school’s DeMoss Hall in Lynchburg.
They had just returned from donating five gay-affirming Christian books to the school’s library, and Caitlin MacIntyre invited onlookers to join them in singing “Amazing Grace.”
“No thanks,” one student said.
Across the sidewalk, students paged through Bibles as the hymn’s familiar first verse filled the air.
Liberty student Lawanda Sowell said she was searching for passages to describe her belief that homosexuality is a sin.
“They believe in what they believe because they are blind,” she said.
The song ended, and the two groups stood opposite each other with two different opinions on how to interpret the role of homosexuality and the definition of marriage in the Bible.
Liberty was the first of 15 planned stops at faith-based institutions on Soulforce’s annual Equality Ride, a national bus tour meant to encourage an inviting environment for any on-campus gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender students.
“Nowhere in the Bible does it say, ‘homosexuality is sin,’” said Soulforce member Nicholas Rocco DeFinis.
Liberty student Steven Mosley disagreed.
“This is never affirmed in the Bible, ever,” he countered. “You should not be living like this.”
Soulforce member Danielle Cooper said many things have changed since the days of Jesus.
“Marriage, in terms of how we see it, has come a long, long way,” she said.
Although they disagreed, dialogue was exactly what Soulforce had hoped for, said Jarrett Lucas.
“It has to be open and it has to be honest,” he said. “Ideally, we come together and understand each other before the end of the day — or however long it takes.”
Earlier this week, Liberty officials had said they would not allow the group on campus. When Soulforce members came to the school in 2006, more than 20 were arrested on charges of trespassing after walking onto school property.
“It wasn’t our intention to tell them ahead of time to come on campus,” Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said Wednesday. “In fact, we told them they couldn’t. But they didn’t cause any incidents, so we didn’t arrest anybody.”
“Most students believe, like my father did, that you should love the sinner, hate the sin, show compassion and try to be a good witness. So that’s what I think our students did today.”
Capt. Al Thomas with the Lynchburg Police Department monitored the assembly from off campus and said the day was incident-free.
In the past couple of weeks, he has facilitated conversations between Soulforce and Liberty as the activist group planned for the event.
“They assured us that this would be a peaceful, nonviolent assembly, and I think that has gone according to plan,” he said Wednesday afternoon.
Liberty junior Erika Green said she was happy to have the chance to speak with the group.
“We’re supposed to love everyone, so it would be wrong to turn them away,” she said.
Katie Higgins, co-director of the Equality Ride, said the group had been in contact with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students at Liberty who felt that the school community promoted discrimination against them.
Falwell said the school’s code of conduct does not prohibit homosexuality, but it does forbid sexual activity outside of marriage.
“And in order for there to be a marriage in Virginia, it has to be between a man and a woman,” he said earlier this week.
As for the donated books, he said, “Somebody brought them up to my office today, and we have a committee that will decide whether to make them a part of the collection or not.”
After more than an hour of discussion, Soulforce members walked back to their bus and a dozen other Equality Riders who rallied from just outside of campus. Many students joined them. The group is in town until Sunday, and plans a discussion on the role of homosexuality in Christianity today at 11 a.m. at the Starbucks on Wards Road.
Wednesday’s dialogue had begun slowly, but continued as clusters formed here and there along University Boulevard.
Bill Carpenter, director of national actions for Soulforce, looked on with interest.
“We’re just beginning the adventure for this year,” he said.

Liberty4all “ Majority of americans disagree with ssm, so we are going to let a 2% gay population’s agenda rule the majority.“ In the 40’s , 50’s and 60’s when they used the Bible for segregation I am sure this was the case also, doesn’t mean that it was right.

It is pretty obvious everyone has an opinion and ZIG even explained the birds and the bees to everyone.
ZIG. While you seem to understand the ins and outs of the whole process, you MIGHT want to know that the female part is called a vagina. Our state was not named after the female’s body part. Writing from Penisburg, Virginia, I rest.

damalama,I know the truth hurts, but I dont mind telling the truth!
WHy homosexuality isn’t right?Ok lets put it into your terms, so you can easly understand what I’m saying.
A man haves a penis, a woman a virgina,a man produces sperm, a woman produces eggs, the egg needs to be fertilized,w/ the sperm to have reproduction!there for the penis is made to go in the virgina, not in the butt or hummping of the two virginas’...Anyone w/ intelligence wouldn’t argue these facts of life!
I guess you will continue to be annoyed because I’m going to continue to be here, and with scripture to back up what I’m saying, really it’s what God almighty is saying, and you have the right not to believe, I’ve always said that, but I do…For good reason!
Lets stop and think out side the box for a sec….why are there men and why are there woman, why didn’t the creator just make us all the same sex?
LOL…..I’m the one that is crazy for believing in a true living God!
damalama,God is real,Satan is real..Don’t kid yourself to think other wise!No need to hate me,I’m just trying to voice the truth and let the lost and in the dark,( that do read my post), understand there is help for them!

poet,
you’re presumptions about me are out of line. Quite the contrary to Wright I am a devout patriot, lover of America and it’s constitution. My prayer is that God will continue to show compassion, favor and Bless America. Amen.
Poet, The Bible says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Prv 14.34). Here is a question for you. Do you think God blesses some nations and not others? And if so what is that criteria to receive that blessing?

scrivsand,
I don’t have time to debate with you in this post on whether the Bible, is the inerrant, Word of God. I encourage you to read “evidence that demands a verdict” by Josh McDowell and then tell me your thoughts. I would challenge you to search out these matters that I speak of. Ask yourself, what if the Bible is true?
Furthermore, I am not rewriting anything. I was quoting to you directly from God’s Word, the Bible, which is my Authority. Regarding Divorce and SSM, two wrongs don’t make a right.
Beyond the Biblical debate on ssm, if it is legalized, schools will begin to teach ssm is ok and normal, freedom of speech and religion will be in danger. So that is ok with you? Majority of americans disagree with ssm, so we are going to let a 2% gay population’s agenda rule the majority.

ZIG you are so annoying, filling up the forum with copying and pasting of bible verses. have a real discussion about why you think homosexuality is wrong in your opinion not by what some book say is right. you quoting passages means nothing to people and it proves nothing to people that don’t believe what you do, other than you know how to read and type. so please save it, actually try to have a intelligent conversation with someone without throwing stuff that has no backing. if i do some research into scientology, hinduism, buddist, or one of the hundred other religion teachings and find that it’s okay to be a homosexual, then by your actions i can come in here and post and post passages from their books or teachings saying it’s okay, and hey i’m right because it comes from a book from a religion. if you can’t discuss something without throwing bible verses in then save it, and let the grown ups talk.

Debate? How can people who believe in talking snakes, witches and magic possibly “debate” anything?
I like the one about the guy who lived in a fish. That one is a REAL doozie!
It’s like this. Christianity is a religion of goat and sheep herders. If that’s how you make your living the most important thing of all is INCREASING the size of your herd. That’s what ALL sex has to be about. That’s why Christianity is against ANYTHING that would interfere with the correct way to make babies and increase the size of the herd. Breeding must be both controlled and maximized. Women are breeding stock, nothing more.
Religions that arose among agricultural peoples have no such sexual hang-ups.

By the way, Cleo, you should do a little research on Voltaire before you so freely quote him! Voltaire was a known racist. He felt that Africans were inferior to the Europeans, and even commented that he wasn’t sure whether the Africans came from monkeys, or the monkeys came from the Africans. He also believed that that they were born to be slaves. Look it up. You’d be surprised.
