Former Amherst County High School QB appears in court on drug charges

AMHERST — Felony drug charges against a former Amherst County High School football star were certified to a grand jury Tuesday during a preliminary hearing in Amherst County General District Court.
Peter Rose, 18, was charged in May with two counts of selling drugs within 1,000 feet of a school. The charges came after a yearlong investigation by an undercover Amherst County sheriff’s deputy posing as a senior at the school.
The deputy’s identity was made public Tuesday when she testified in court. Brooke Hedrick, identified by the sheriff’s office only as being in her 20s, testified she first enrolled in June 2006 during summer school.
“They had a lot of drug complaints at the high school,” Hedrick testified.
Rose, who led the Lancers to back-to-back state titles, was not a target of her investigation, she said. Hedrick said she knew who he was and that she shared an English class with him, but the two had never had a conversation when he approached her in the school parking lot on April 29.
She testified that he asked, “‘Were you looking for some today,’ meaning drugs.”
Within 15 minutes, she said, Rose met her in the McDonald’s parking lot off U.S. 60 in Amherst. He sold her a quarter of an ounce of marijuana for $50, she said.
Then on May 7, she testified, they again met at the McDonald’s, where he sold her another $50 bag, she said.
Both exchanges were video and audio taped, she testified.
On cross-examination by Joseph Sanzone, Rose’s defense lawyer, Hedrick denied that she had set the meeting place. Instead, she said, it was Rose’s idea to meet there.
Investigator Dennie Black testified Hedrick was parked 694 feet away from Amherst Elementary School.
After the hearing, Sanzone said the way the distance from a school is measured could be an issue if Rose is indicted by a grand jury and goes to trial. If the alleged sale had taken place outside the 1,000-foot school zone, the crime would be a misdemeanor, he said.
While questioning Black, Sanzone suggested the distance along the normally traveled route between the school and the restaurant would be much more than 1,000 feet.
Judge Edwin Burnette ruled there was enough evidence to send the case forward. Burnette added that he had researched the question of how distance should be measured in these cases, but could not find any precedent.
Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Carey Payne asked the judge to drop two misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Payne said he will bring the lesser charges back to the grand jury, but wanted to avoid procedural confusion between the misdemeanors and felonies Tuesday.
Rose is free on bond. A conviction for selling drugs in a school zone carries a penalty of one to five years in prison.
As the school’s quarterback in 2006 and 2007, he led the Lancers to two state titles. As a senior, the Associated Press and Virginia High School League Coaches Association named him the Virginia Group AA Player of the Year.
He had been recruited to play cornerback at Virginia Tech, but his scholarship offer was revoked after the charges were filed.
Rose’s brother Anthony, a junior, stepped into the role of quarterback for the Lancers this season. The football team has shown support for the Rose family. In the team’s opening scrimmage at William Campbell High School, one player had a towel tucked into his hip pocket that read “4 Rose.”
First-year coach Cecil Phillips said Anthony and the team are using Rose’s troubles as inspiration for this season.

Thoughts for the Day
This verse in Proverbs tells us that even our thoughts can be sinful and one who is a scoffer is an abomination to men. God knows every man’s thoughts and we are told in this verse that foolish plans are sinful. The word foolishness in this verse has the meaning of trusting in one’s own heart and mind. When we plan our own way and leave God out of those plans, it is very foolish indeed. The Bible tells us to trust in the Lord and not to rely on our own understanding. Because God is “all knowing” and “all wise,“ He will lead us in the right path.
Proverbs 3:5-7:
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
Isaiah 55:8-9:
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
The Lord tells us in these verses in Isaiah that God’s thoughts are higher than man’s thoughts. That is why we must ask for the mind of Christ, so that our thoughts will become holy and righteous and we will then be able to overcome carnal thinking. In fact, the Bible tells us to cast down all imaginations and any high thing that would exalt itself above the knowledge of God.
2 Corinthians 10:3-6:
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
This means when the devil is attempting to get us to believe a lie, we must quote, in faith, the scripture that would offset and overcome that lie. When Satan tempts us, we are told to “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Submission to God is an attitude of the heart, shown by obedience to His Word. Resist means to refuse to cooperate with the devil. To walk in the Spirit means we are to live in prayer and in the Word of God. Really this is not much different than walking with a friend. You become friends with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. God loved us so much He provided for victory. He provided for victory even when we have a failure and yield to temptation. The way to overcome, is to repent and confess our sin and then get back on the right track with Jesus and go on and not allow the devil to condemn us and keep us away from God. We must ask God to cleanse our hearts and our thought life, as this will get to the root of our sin. Our sinful and foolish actions are the result of sinful and foolish thoughts.
We must also not be guilty of being a scoffer or scorner, as these sins will alienate us from other people. Nobody wants to be around someone who is continually railing and talking against others. People who mock sacred things really are an abomination to others.
Prayer for the Day
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your patience and love toward me. I have failed You many times, but You have never failed me. Lord, purify my thoughts so that they will be pleasing to You. May Your Words dwell in my heart and my mind so that I will not sin against You. Lord, may I think loving and kind thoughts toward others and may I never be a scoffer and one who demeans others. Deliver me from all foolish thoughts and give me the mind of Christ, so that I am a good witness for You in this world. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen

Freedom my friend, first let me say,there is nothing you could ever do for me ,that would make me change my faith,I’ve tried to live for others/myself,One is a little number,and when we live for ourselves,we lead small and shallow lives.Selfishness is a destructive disease with unpleasent symptoms!

WHy Jesus died?Yes, he died so our sins could be forgiven,but the the reason our sins need to be forgiven,is so we can fellowship with God!If sins aren’t forgiven,we can’t come in to his presence because we are sinful human beings and God is righteous and HOLY!He can’t abide in the presence of sin.Yet God greatly desires to fellowship with us.He wants our companionship,so so much That he sent His only son to die a horrible death,to shed his blood to wash,cleanse and completely remove sin from us!
Jesus’ death was not just so we can go to HEaven,although that’s wonderful.He died so we can enter his presence and fellowship with him.BEcause of it, we don’t have to shrink away from God in fear!We can come bodly before his throne,fellowship with him,and have our needs met in life.God wants us to live a great life,be happy,be a witness to others,and then someday live even better life than we could imagine with him in Heaven-a place where there is no pain or tears!
We have to get our minds off ourselves and focused on God.When we do and start drawing near and fellowshiping with him,that’s when we find the strenght to overcome sin!
I have so much to say but limited to time and I’LL CLOSE ON THAT NOTE,
The older I get , life seems to resemble a roll of toilet paper,the shorter it gets the faster it goes,and when I go home to be with my Father in Heaven, I want everyone to know what my legacy here on earth was.People will summarize your life in one sentence pick it now!Don’t let your friends and family guess your life purpose at your funeral.Live the legacy today that you want to leave.Life is short,history is long.It is up to us to spend our time on pursuits, that will out live us!

good lord !!DALAMOOSE !!,,i swear you must be a cop,,no,no, a kid of a cop,,thats sweet,,but they are big BOYS,,and they love a good scrap,,and yea it does take someone special to do that work,,but that applies to just about all work,,drs. in er,,garbage man,,teacher,,a warrior,,put that all together and you have a society,,take anyone of them away ,,and you will have problems,,and we know what tv is and isnt,,who superman is and who a cop is,,calm down,,what 14NYMETS said has validity,,afterall,,they did settled out of court ,,and we are waiting to hear why,,was it an alfa-plea,,i am very concern what happens in amherst ,,i have a family and to young daughters there and just brought a home their,,so they will be going to amherst high,,they will be driving,,and i dont want killer cops in my mist,,its bad enough that i have to worry about BOYS,,but add bad cops to that mix,,thats not good,,and something elce we dont have to ask a cop as you put it,,we have what they call the WWW,,you be surprise what you can find out,,then go ahead an bother a cop but only as a last resort,,i want him gettin the bad guys,,ok,,and trust me a cop knows what pot is and isnt,,and they carry tester w/them for coke and other drugs,,its just that the lab has to verify the feild results for it to be admissable in a court of law..and when people respond ,,back at us as i just did,,it proves your ignorance,,have a good one,,and keep up the good work ,,this form needs a good cross-section of its readers,,now i,ve got to go pick on ziggiemonster !!

Speaking of hiding behind a forum, I guarantee you wouldn’t make your narrow minded comments about backwards Amherst country people to their faces, would you? Didn’t think so. T4NYMETS you are a classic ignorant Amherst county person, or even a Lynchburger when it came to Beard who just spouts out stupid comments when they have no idea what went on at that scene. You critize the police when you would be to afraid to be one, you would wet your pants if you had to do what those men and women have to do. You wouldn’t be able to walk up to a car with blacked out windows bassing rap music on main street, or downtown without curling up in a ball and crying. I would love to see you have to struggle with a drugged/or crazed person by yourself, even have someone resist arrest on you, heck to even see you respond when someone like you begins to argue with the police over a speeding ticket, also to see you apporach one of these people. But it’s fine, stay in the safety of an online forum so no one knows who you are and say what you say which even more shows how much a coward you are, and disrepsect police, but you wouldn’t dream of saying that to one of the in real life, even though you know nothing would happen because they are respectable people that would let you critize them, and still risk their life to protect you. You should be ashamed of yourself for spouting out stupid comments. I believe you made stupid comments about the child hit and run as well saying that it was taking forever for the evidence to come back because the child was black. Again the stupidity that is you and others that sit there and watch CSI and see that crimes are solved in 30 minutes with commerical break so thats the way it is. The police show up with a green laser and can see everything. However, your brain is so small that you don’t know that crime is committed all over this state, and there is only two places were the evidence is sent to be looked over by scientist, that is Roanoke and Richmond. Ask any Cop about it, for them to even get confrimation that Marijuana is Marijuana normally takes a month or two. But of course idiots like you wouldn’t know that because CSI is done in minutes, or maybe an hour if it is a two part series.

You laugh at Gods word the Holy Bible,you have that right,thats a choice you have to make,and also live with!I choose to listen to Gods word and it gives me Freedom, the choices I make I know I have to live with,same with all of us and Peter Rose is no different! Blaming every one else (even though you are right he shouldnt have it to begin with), for his own actions dont solve the problem.
If you choose to deal drugs, then you just became a part of the very chain of drug trafficing that you are putting down so hard,he’s dealing drugs in our schools,which is a big no no…Why?HE could be playing football at VA TECH…but he decided he wanted to dope up our kids by being a supplier… Freedom doesnt mean to do whatever you want to, no matter who it’s hurting,and dealing Drugs in our schools has got to stop,as matter of fact it should be double the time if you get caught!
