AMHERST — Felony drug charges against a former Amherst County High School football star were certified to a grand jury Tuesday during a preliminary hearing in Amherst County General District Court.

Peter Rose, 18, was charged in May with two counts of selling drugs within 1,000 feet of a school. The charges came after a yearlong investigation by an undercover Amherst County sheriff’s deputy posing as a senior at the school.

The deputy’s identity was made public Tuesday when she testified in court. Brooke Hedrick, identified by the sheriff’s office only as being in her 20s, testified she first enrolled in June 2006 during summer school.

“They had a lot of drug complaints at the high school,” Hedrick testified.

Rose, who led the Lancers to back-to-back state titles, was not a target of her investigation, she said. Hedrick said she knew who he was and that she shared an English class with him, but the two had never had a conversation when he approached her in the school parking lot on April 29.

She testified that he asked, “‘Were you looking for some today,’ meaning drugs.”

Within 15 minutes, she said, Rose met her in the McDonald’s parking lot off U.S. 60 in Amherst. He sold her a quarter of an ounce of marijuana for $50, she said.

Then on May 7, she testified, they again met at the McDonald’s, where he sold her another $50 bag, she said.

Both exchanges were video and audio taped, she testified.

On cross-examination by Joseph Sanzone, Rose’s defense lawyer, Hedrick denied that she had set the meeting place. Instead, she said, it was Rose’s idea to meet there.

Investigator Dennie Black testified Hedrick was parked 694 feet away from Amherst Elementary School.

After the hearing, Sanzone said the way the distance from a school is measured could be an issue if Rose is indicted by a grand jury and goes to trial. If the alleged sale had taken place outside the 1,000-foot school zone, the crime would be a misdemeanor, he said.

While questioning Black, Sanzone suggested the distance along the normally traveled route between the school and the restaurant would be much more than 1,000 feet.

Judge Edwin Burnette ruled there was enough evidence to send the case forward. Burnette added that he had researched the question of how distance should be measured in these cases, but could not find any precedent.

Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Carey Payne asked the judge to drop two misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Payne said he will bring the lesser charges back to the grand jury, but wanted to avoid procedural confusion between the misdemeanors and felonies Tuesday.

Rose is free on bond. A conviction for selling drugs in a school zone carries a penalty of one to five years in prison.

As the school’s quarterback in 2006 and 2007, he led the Lancers to two state titles. As a senior, the Associated Press and Virginia High School League Coaches Association named him the Virginia Group AA Player of the Year.

He had been recruited to play cornerback at Virginia Tech, but his scholarship offer was revoked after the charges were filed.

Rose’s brother Anthony, a junior, stepped into the role of quarterback for the Lancers this season. The football team has shown support for the Rose family. In the team’s opening scrimmage at William Campbell High School, one player had a towel tucked into his hip pocket that read “4 Rose.”

First-year coach Cecil Phillips said Anthony and the team are using Rose’s troubles as inspiration for this season.

This is really a crying shame.  He is such a talented football player and could have likely went very far with his career.  Now, all that has changed.  He committed a crime.  He should do the time.  If he wasn’t caught now, he would have been caught eventually and by that time, it would have probably escalated into something far worse.  I feel for him and his family.  Nobody forced anyone to buy drugs from him….but he still sold them and he made that choice.  I hope he learns something from this.

,,THANK YOU ZIG !!when we were studing the “"BOOK of Revelations”“,,me and my friends skiped that day,,we were out discussing the wedding story of JESUS over a bottle of wine,,about his miricle,,how they ran out of wine,,how awful that was to be half bussed,,and how great it was of JESUS,,to keep the party going,,and how when the party BOSS ,,said why save the best for last !!come to find out that ,,that was the way of doing business,,you always started out with the most expensive wines you had,,but as the party go-ers got more bussed,,you gave them maddog 20/20,,cause they would,nt know cause they were already bussing,,i tell you that saved me a lot of money,,cause there is a big differance from 100$$ bottle of wine vs 10 $$,,and i use that practice to this day !! WHAT we concentrated on about the B/REV was how it was a dream (nightmare),,how it was almost droped from the bible(HRCC),,and how the greatest mystery of that book was,,is how earth history revolves around it and how it fits a 100 year pattern,,and that JESUS becomes incarnated every 100 years,,and its his strugle to claim the VATICAN THRONE,,NOW THATS HEAVY !! later ZIG,,And Thanks !!

The events are unfortunate but as for a County we have seen a very talented young man just lose all that he has worked for since entering the school system. I have my personel feelings but I will not post them. I will however say that the bible says “he who is without sin cast the first stone”. I wish you all the best P. Rose and Go Lancers.

Ok freedom, you asked it, so here you go,but first let me say,Rev. is for those who understand the meaning of God and the Bible,It’s the last Book in The Bible,If You try to understand it without reading The rest of The Bible,It could be Cloudy and hard to understand!
These are the seven facets or manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life:

1. The Spirit of Justification: “...you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.“ We are all justified because of God’s grace and by our faith, and it is the Spirit of God who draws us and empowers us to acknowledge Jesus as our Lord and Savior (1 Corinthians 12:3). This is the first work of the Spirit when one is born again.

2. The Spirit of Sanctification: 2 Thessalonians 2:13, “...God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.“ Sanctification is the process of God’s grace by which the believer is separated from sin, purified by life lived in the Spirit. (Galatians 5:16, 25 and Romans 8:1-14) The fruit of the Spirit will begin to manifest as we yield to the process of sanctification.

3. The Spirit of Life: Romans 8:2, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.“ This is the Spirit of adoption (Romans 8:15) which makes us the sons of God (Romans 8:16-19). We can now live in the resurrection power of Christ where the operation of the gifts of the Spirit cause our lives to become supernatural. The Spirit will give life to our mortal bodies. Healing and strength will come into our bodies of flesh (Romans 8:11) as well as giving us a glorified body in that day.

4. The Spirit of Truth: John 14:17 “The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.“ The truth will set us free. The truth will bring revelation knowledge as we are taught by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of truth will reveal Jesus to us (John 15:26). Vision will be given to lead us into all truth and reveal the kingdom to us. Deception will be removed, and the lies destroyed.

5. The Spirit of Wisdom: Ephesians 1:17, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.“ Not only will the Spirit give us a knowledge of Jesus, but it will give us insight into His mind and what He is doing (1 Corinthians 2:6-16). The Holy Spirit is our teacher (John 14:26).

6. The Spirit of Deliverance: Matthew 12:28 “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.“ It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that we are delivered from sin and by that same Spirit demons are cast out and the powers of darkness are defeated.

7. The Spirit of Prayer: Romans 8:26, “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.“ Ephesians 6:18 tells us that all prayer should be done in the Spirit.

These are the seven profound works that the Holy Spirit will do in our lives. If we allow Him to do these works in and through us, He will perfect us. There are other names of the Holy Spirit in scripture such as the Spirit of holiness, burning, etc. However, they will all be identified in the seven functions which I have listed.
I’ll be glad to help out any way possable!A believer and friend in Christ,Zig

I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to this, why are Peter Rose’s charges felony’s and Jody Ramsey’s (one of the kids caught selling drugs to the same officer, that you never hear about)a misdemeanor? Is that based on the dispute on the distance from the school?  Just figured while I was sitting inside bored myself that I would ask.
