John McCain’s choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate on the Republican presidential ticket raised the excitement level for Lynchburg-area leaders including the Rev. Jonathan Falwell and Mathew Staver, dean of the Liberty University School of law.

“Not only is she pro-life, pro-family and pro-marriage, but she has a great record of exposing government corruption and government waste,” said Falwell, pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

“I’m excited to see this,” Falwell said Friday. Palin’s selection surprised some observers, he said, but “I think it’s a good surprise.”

Staver said Palin represented “an absolutely brilliant choice” and “a master genius stroke.”

Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University, said he learned about Palin from an airport TV monitor while traveling through Florida. “I think it’s a brilliant choice.”

“I think it will help him with women and conservatives, and I think that’s where he needed help,” Falwell Jr. said.

Jonathan Falwell said he was happy to see McCain set a course that he had indicated during an Aug. 16 forum held by Rick Warren at Saddleback Church in California. Democratic candidate Barack Obama and McCain both talked about faith during separate interviews with Warren, who wrote the best seller, “The Purpose-Driven Life.”

“John McCain made it very clear that his administration was going to be a pro-life administration, and he proved that’s his belief and his passion today with the choice of Sarah Palin,” Jonathan Falwell said.

Falwell credited Palin with a role in stopping Alaska’s often-ridiculed “bridge to nowhere” that was proposed as a Congressional earmark of $398 million to connect the city of Ketchikan to its airport on a nearby island.

Congress removed the earmark status from the funds and sent them to Alaska as general-use road money, after which Palin cut the bridge completely out of the state budget. At the time, she said it was too expensive.

“We need someone to step into leadership in Washington who believes higher taxes are not the answer, but less spending is the answer. We need a Congress with a leadership that tells them that’s what you need to do,” Jonathan Falwell said.

Falwell said he had never met Palin, but “I’m familiar with her record, her beliefs and her values.”

Staver spoke by phone from Minneapolis during a meeting of the Council for National Policy, a group of religious and government officials.

“The excitement in the room is absolutely palpable,” Staver said.

Attendees included evangelical leader James Dobson, “who said he has not been this excited since Ronald Reagan,” Staver said.

“Senator McCain could not have chosen a better vice president than Sarah Palin,” Staver said. “She is intelligent, effective, articulate and has substance. She has shown she has the ability to clean up government corruption and balance the budget.

“She can reach women, and I think she’s trans-generational,” said Staver, who also is founder of Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit legal group that defends religious freedom, traditional family, and pro-life issues.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-6th District, issued his own endorsement of Palin.

“She has a reputation for being a fiscal conservative who has made tough decisions and cut spending, and has worked to pass landmark ethics reforms in her state,” Goodlatte said.

“The voters of the Sixth District will find her a well-qualified candidate who shares their values of energy independence, personal responsibility, and a strong national defense,” Goodlatte said.

continued (sudden death syndrone)
trnymets… If all you have to defend the scandals and criminal activities of the conservatives is the ‘boogey man trick’ then that makes you a hypocrite. That’s what I pointed out and that’s what you continue to do.
You’re hypocrisy is so transparent its pathetic.

Cowboy77: The real beauty of this country is that you don’t have to move if you don’t like something. This love it or leave it is the same kind of nationalism Hitler taught.
We have a right to advocate for change. That’s the difference between being a patriot as opposed to being a nationalist.

Palin was absolutley awesome last night.  She has struck the fear into her oposers Have to love it…
I rarley go to church however I do not think running as Vice President is sitting behind the pulpit.  There is a such thing as Church and State.  Yes politics find there way into church I am sure and vice versa.  There sure is a lot of bitterness on these pages. I can honestly say the people I do know that go to church are not this bitter nor are they double standard.  They are human and do human things but seem to have a good grasp on life.

I am not from here but if you hate this town so much then why do you live here?  The beautiful thing about this country is tha you can get up and move annywhere anytime you want. I have lived in 5 different cities in Va. and have lived in total of 9 different states.  Lynchburg is not to bad…

Mr Falwell, what happened to the scripture that reads…women shall not usurp authority over men? As i understand, women in baptist doctrine can speak from the pulpit ONLY if they have PERMISSION from a man , is that correct, i must be confused, is it any wonder i feel a double standard here!?

So what is your view of Palin now Mr. Falwell? It’s obvious that Ms Palin neglected to teach her children the “Family (Christian) Value” of “Sexual Abstinence”. If Falwell truly believed in Family Values, as he preaches, he would have denounced his support for the Vice Presidential candidate by now. Does this mean that it is now ok for LU students to have sex as long as they have an agreement that they will marry if the girl become pregnant? This is just an example of the hypocrisy that we are sick of coming down from the Mountain of Eternal Hatred. Practice what you preach TRBC! If you denounce those that do not teach their children proper “Christian Values” than you should denounce this VP candidate. OH! But that would mean you would have to tell your congregation that they should not vote in this year’s election, and we can’t have that. After all, politics is your religion, Jesus is your republican muscle man and GOD is your tool to instill fear in the hearts of your congregation to get them to vote “The Republican Way”. The Republican Is Thy Savior, Rejoice in the G.O.P.!

I just had to join in on the fun.  I love when people start pointing fingers.  Its pretty simple to me. The ones pointing the fingers are only speaking of themselves.  It’s really not worth trying to get through to them because there is no winning.  It’s human nature to point the finger. It allows the person to feel superior.

From what I have seen so far in the Race for Presidency is that one is winning vaotes by making the person feel impowered.  And I stress FEEL… Sensationalism.sp?

Poet, please point out exactly what kind of substance you’ve offered in any of these posts.  Here’s the point: Some liberals on this forum are complaining about Palin having no ethics because she had someone fired.  Every time I turn around, Christians/Republicans are being called hypocrites.  Please explain to me how these same people that are pointing fingers at us are not hypocrites themselves when their own party is full of corruption and scandal.  That was my point.  You obviously read something more into it. I do not condone cheating, corruption, lying, murder, etc. from ANYONE, regardless of party affiliation, nor did I “praise” or “overlook” it in my original post that you responded to.  I was responding to everyone else pointing it out in the Republican party.  Why is that so difficult for you to understand?

And here’s an even better example.  For the past couple of days I’ve heard all about Palin’s 17-year-old daughter being pregnant.  Why would anyone bring that up, considering the fact that Obama himself was born out of wedlock?
