Lynchburg City Councilman Joseph Seiffert will not seek re-election this spring, he said today.
Seiffert, 64, has been Ward IV's councilman since 2000. He called his time in office "a privilege and an honor" but said that it is time for him to step aside.
"That does not mean I am going away however. ... Five months remain in my term," the retired police chief said. "There is a lot of work yet to be done. Council is just now starting what will be a very challenging budget proces so don't think I will lay back and fade away."
Three other councilmen are up for re-election this year: Michael Gillette, of Ward I; Ceasor Johnson, of Ward II; and Jeff Helgeson, of Ward III. All three have said they will run again.
