BEDFORD — If you’re going to commit a crime, locking the keys in your getaway vehicle may not be the best way to go.
But that’s just what 61-year-old Carolyn Fay Biggs of Bedford is accused of doing, along with stealing more than $200 out of a woman’s purse.
Biggs appeared before General District Court Judge James Farmer on Monday. Farmer ruled there was enough evidence to send her charge of grand larceny to the Bedford grand jury.
Summer Thompson testified that on the morning of March 25, she brought breakfast to her roommate, who was working at the Tractor Supply Co. in the Wal-Mart shopping center off U.S. 460 in Bedford.
Thompson said she left her pocketbook, containing most of a $300 paycheck, on the passenger seat with the door unlocked.
“I was only going to be a few minutes,” she said.
But according to testimony, a man in the parking lot saw Biggs cruising through the parking lot, pulling up beside various cars and looking inside. When Biggs pulled up next to Thompson’s car she got out, took the purse out of Thompson’s car and into her car, then put it back, light a few hundred dollars, according to testimony.
When she put the purse back, she pulled her sleeve over her hand and started wiping down the door and doorframe, according to testimony.
When confronted, Biggs first told the man the car was her daughter’s. As he was telling her he didn’t believe her, Biggs noticed she had locked herself out of her car.
Bedford County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Christian Stoneman testified she unlocked Biggs’ car and found $217 in loose cash in the floorboards.
If indicted by the grand jury and convicted in circuit court, grand larceny carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
Biggs is free on bond.

...“that’s like saying a woman that dresses “sexy” is asking to be harassed or raped.“... Well of course they are (damalama)! You don’t see good Christian women dressing like that do you? I have seen women going to Church at TRBC. They adhere to the same laws that Muslim women follow. One would be hard pressed to find any proof what-so-ever that they even have legs or breasts, let alone any of the other “usual” equipment that women of lesser virtue so boldly display. Living in Lynchburg as long as I have, when I see a woman’s knee I say to myself….. “Now THAT woman is asking for it!“ I’m sure (Crispy Daisy) feels the same way.

damalama, are you kidding? There’s no comparison at all between leaving a purse out in the open in an unlocked car and someone being raped because of the way they dress. The victim is never to blame for being raped.
What happened with the purse is a crime of opportunity, and a little common sense would have prevented it. It’s not “trusting” to leave an object of value unprotected, where anyone can see it and easily grab it; it’s irresponsible. We all know that there are lots of people out there who steal things, so why would anyone make it so easy for them?
Would you leave your wallet on the front seat of your unattended, unlocked car? Would you worry that anyone walking by might decide to simply open the door and take it? Or would you, trusting as you are, leave it there and go off without a second thought, and be simply shocked to find it gone when you returned?
My husband had his wallet, cell phone and paycheck stolen from his unlocked car. I was sympathetic about his losses and the hassle it caused, but couldn’t believe that he left all of those things completely unprotected—why help the thieves? Trusting is nice, but you also have to be realistic.

Is this the same Carolyn Fay Biggs that runs [Biggs “Lil Dickens”] Day Care Center?

Obviously, what this woman did was wrong. If you leave a purse containing several hundred dollars on the front seat of an unlocked car, though, how surprised can you be to find it’s been stolen? Intending to only be gone a few minutes makes no difference at all—it doesn’t take long for someone to open an unlocked car door and grab a purse. It’s hard to muster any sympathy at all for the victim. A minimum amount of common sense would have prevented this whole incident.
