The Brookneal Town Council race was still undecided Wednesday night after a flood of write-in votes were cast Tuesday.
Campbell County registrar Karen Danos said at least one of the three seats could be decided in the 331 write-in votes, but election officials wouldn’t know until they completed the final canvassing process.
County election officials started counting absentee ballots Wednesday around 1 p.m. and were to start the canvass around 4 p.m., going precinct by precinct, Danos said. They were expected to finish for the day at 6:30 p.m. and the Brookneal votes weren’t expected to be counted until today, Danos said.
Unofficial results from Tuesday night showed incumbents James A. “Champ” Nowlin and Richard T. Adams and first-time challenger Phillip Sheppard to have the highest tallies, with incumbent Stacey Hailey trailing.
