BEDFORD — To alleviate a problematic intersection along U.S. 460, Bedford City Council voted Tuesday to seek shared funding from the Virginia Department of Transportation for a $2 million road improvement project.
The city wants to extend Ole Turnpike Drive from Sword Beach Lane west to U.S. 460, which Assistant City Manager Bart Warner said would eliminate an existing intersection near where the Super 8 motel is located. The elevation of that intersection is dangerous for drivers who can’t see cars approaching, he said.
“It’s a real hazard,” Warner said.
Extending Ole Turnpike Drive would create a new intersection farther west on U.S. 460 that Warner said would be much safer.
The city is trying to take advantage of a VDOT revenue sharing program that City Manager Charles Kolakowski said was recently opened to cities and towns through an appropriation from the General Assembly. It limits funding to $1 million per locality, he said.
The city had to adopt a resolution Tuesday to participate in the program for the current fiscal year.
