An Appomattox County man was killed early Tuesday after falling asleep behind the wheel, according to Virginia State Police.

Walter Lee Mosley, 68, a carrier for The News & Advance, died at the scene on Virginia 24 after crashing his car around 6:15 a.m., Sgt. David O. Cooper said.

It appears he fell asleep, Cooper said. Mosley was heading west on Virginia 24, near the entrance to Holliday Lake, when he veered off the road, overcorrected and struck an embankment, flipping his 2000 Chevrolet Lumina.

He was not wearing a seat belt, Cooper said. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Mosley had finished delivering his papers for the day, according to Terry H. Jamerson, publisher of The News & Advance. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Mosley’s family,” she said.

Mosley, who lived on Liberty Chapel Road, has been an independent contractor for The News & Advance since March 2006.
