Forty-three cities and counties will share $1.6 million in federal funds for citizen alert systems.
The systems provide automated emergency phone and text notifications to anyone who registers their home phone, cell or pager.
Two localities in the Lynchburg area received money: Amherst County got $40,000, while Appomattox County got $50,000.
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced the funding Friday to help localities create or expand the systems. He said the citizen alerts can help saves lives.
