Crisis Line of Central Va. to host open house
Crisis Line of Central Virginia, 1900 Tate Springs Road, Suite 8, will hold an Open House from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 16. The public can tour the facilities, meet the staff, and learn about programs and volunteer opportunities.

Parkinson group to meet at The Summit
The Lynchburg Parkinson Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 at The Summit, 1400 Enterprise Drive.

Alzheimer’s Memory Walk to help raise funds
The Alzheimer’s Memory Walk will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 20 in downtown Lynchburg. Registration begins 8:30 a.m. Teams are needed to raise funds and volunteers are needed to help with the walk.
To kick off the Saturday walk, the Beard Center on Aging, SERVE, and students from the Bonner leaders program are partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association and Adult Care Center to sponsor a Mini-Memory Walk at Wake Field House from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 19. Seniors from Valley View, Heritage Green, the Adult Care Center, and the Lynchburg community are participating in this event to raise awareness for the cause and walk, which is open to all those interested. Campus volunteers are needed to walk with the visiting seniors and to help cheer them on.

Abduction prevention program offered at TEP
The Family Ministry at Trinity Ecumenical Parish, located on Virginia 122 (one mile south of the Hales Ford Bridge), Moneta, will hold Escape School, a nationally recognized abduction prevention program that empowers children and parents by teaching practical escape strategies and techniques. The event will be held Friday and will begin with a potluck meal (bring a dish to share). Drinks will be provided. The program, for children ages 3 and up, is presented in an entertaining and non-threatening manner, and teaches children how to differentiate between good and bad strangers, the common lures abductors use, how to “get away, right away” and how to find help when needed.

High Hopes to celebrate anniversary
High Hopes, Lynchburg’s Stroke Survivors’ Support Group will celebrate its fourth anniversary from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday in the multipurpose room at the Jamerson YMCA.
The group, which meets from 1 to 3 p.m. the second Thursday of every month at the Jamerson YWCA, was started so that stroke survivors and caregivers would have a place to go and share experiences and learn about stroke through interaction with others.

Blood drive to honor WTC 9/11 responder
Resurrection Catholic Church, 15353 Moneta Road, Moneta, will hold a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday in honor of Thomas Kennedy, son of Bill and Eileen Kennedy of Moneta. Kennedy, with the fire department in New York, was one of the first responders at the World Trade Center.

Foot care topic at ‘Healthy Feet’ program“Healthy Feet for Active Adults” will be presented at 6 p.m. today at Trinity Ecumenical Parish Church, 40 Lakemount Drive, Moneta.
John Clements, D.P.M. will discuss general foot care with a focus on preventing small foot issues from escalating into major health problems. A complimentary foot health screening will be offered.

YWCA to offer groups for women and children
The YWCA Domestic Violence Prevention is offering support groups for women and children from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays. Topics include “Legal Advocacy” (Sept. 15); “Healthy Sexuality & STDs” (Sept. 22); and “Cycle of Violence in the Family” (Sept. 29).

Family fun day and concert to benefit CMN
A Family Fun Day and Concert, sponsored by Food Lion, will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Amelon United Methodist Church, 200 Amelon Road, Madison Heights. The carnival, from 1 to 5 p.m., will feature bouncy rides, games, raffles and food. There is a small fee for the carnival.
A free concert, with John Sines Jr., will start at 5 p.m. and will include Tenneil and God’s Roadcrew. Participants should bring a lawn chair or blanket. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.
True Reflection to meet at Thomas Road
True Reflection, a confidential recovery and growth group for women struggling with unwanted same-sex attraction, will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays beginning Sept. 15 at Thomas Road Baptist Church (Freedom Ministry).
New weight loss group to meet at church
A new chapter of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is meeting from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesdays at Amelon United Methodist Church, 220 Amelon Road, Madison Heights.
