QUESTION: I have slightly elevated triglycerides and glucose and high blood pressure. Are all of these related and is there a way to reduce them without medication?
ANSWER: They are all three related in that all of them can all be linked to weight. I talked with Dr. Marta Sayers with Cardiology of Southwest Virginia, who tells me a person doesn’t have to be obese to have elevated triglycerides, glucose and high blood pressure.
She says, “It’s not like you have to be 300 pounds. If you are 10 or 15 pounds overweight, just that much can make a difference.”
Dr. Sayers says if a person exercises and eats a healthy diet that weight reduction can help reduce those levels. She suggests reducing or eliminating complex carbs from your diet, and checking with your doctor after six months on the plan.
