New GI bill Q&A set
The new Post-9/11 GI Bill greatly increases educational benefits for all National Guard, Reserve and Active Duty personnel who have served 90 or more days on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001. The new benefit structure goes into effect Aug. 1.
The Lynchburg Public Library will host Lawrence Provost at 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at the library, 2315 Memorial Ave. The veteran and American Legion member will answer questions about the new GI bill.
Enhanced benefits include up to four years of college tuition, books and supplies supplements and housing allowances, depending on active time served.

Former POW to speak
David Harker, a Lynchburger who was a POW in Vietnam for five years, will speak at today’s Veterans Day observance in Appomattox.
Harker received two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star and the Prisoner of War medal.
The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Wall of Honor in Appomattox Courthouse Square. The sponsors are the American Legion Post 104 and Auxiliary Unit 104, with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9855 and Auxiliary 9855.

Activities set at AES
Amherst Elementary School will mark Veterans Day with several activities. Those activities include an assembly with visiting veterans. There will be music by the National Guard Band, and a student will read a patriotic essay. After the assembly, veterans will make classroom visits. Four or five veterans will answer fifth graders’ questions during a Q&A in the library; those veterans include WWII POW Elmer Loving.

Veterans Day on stage
Brookneal Elementary School students will perform an hour-long patriotic program today in honor of Veterans Day. Special guest state Sen. Robert Hurt, along with about 75 local area veterans, will attend. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. and is open to the public.
